Surely lack of volume, inability to interface with modern technology and dubious taste in music would rule him out? The Black version of this driver is also not waterproof. The cutaway version shown on Monday is also an expensive import.

    How about this

for the height of British technology? Like Spendor and Harbeth it produces a polite sound from advanced plastics.

oh, hang on, i've built some pretty cool speakers
Components brought to you by: Acer netbook: Foobar -> HiFace USB SPDIF -> RakkDAC digital board (modified) -> Custom valve output stage w. vol pot -> Dared 300B SET (modified) -> 3 way with 2 cheap ribbons, peerless silk tweeter and a focal 8" mid-woofer per side in an acoustically treated room (Tontine batts + custom bass traps tuned to 40Hz and 120Hz). They look like early T.A.D. drivers to me, there would be well over $250k worth of drivers in that pic

    Hello Mondie,

They certainly look similar to TADs and that is no accident, since it is a design TAD "borrowed" when they hired ex JBL Vice President of Engineering Bart Locanthi.

The speakers are JBL LE-375 (later 2440 and 2441) midrange compression drivers and waht look like early JBL woofers (not LE-15A woofers , D130???).

With that combined acoustic ouput, it could easily have been used as some sort of acoustic weapon. There are 64 JBL LE-375 in the picture. When coupled onto the JBL 2309 horns shown, each has a sensitivity of 107 dB/1W/1m when used with an acoustic lens. Without the lens (as shown), who knows probably 112dB/1W/1m plus....

I would love to know the full story behind the pic...

OK the Full Story, from the Lansing Heritage Site:
Bill "Thomas bridged his involvement in both the aeronautical and loudspeaker industries with the establishment of a fully owned subsidiary of JBL called Transducers Inc. in the 1950s. This subsidiary was primarily known for developing test facilities to simulate high intensity noise and vibration conditions for the design of missile components. The picture at left illustrates such a facility. The drivers shown are believed to be Transducers Inc. 375H compression drivers and 150H low-frequency drivers, designed and built by JBL. The 150H bore no relation to the 150-4C of 1953, or obviously, the 150-4H of 1985. It consisted of the chassis from a 130A with a cone derived from the LE15A. The heavier cone of the LE15A was essential in this application since the lighter cones of JBL’s other 15” drivers would not have withstood the high power levels. The 375H was a modified version of the JBL 375 using a stainless steel diaphragm that was considerably heavier, but more rugged than the standard aluminum diaphragm.
JBL established numerous facilities similar to that pictured above throughout the aeronautical industry, some of which remained in operation as late as 2000."

reminds me of a story I read about simulating the noise from a space launch (or something similiar - it was loud whatever it was)..
they built an enormous vertical horn firing straight down and tried it, but it wasn't loud enough.. IIRC they then did something to the drivers or amps to make it louder again, but still no-where near being loud enough.
in the end they filled it with gas and ignited the gas from the top, effectively horn-loading the explosion!!

    fun stuff

I have always found that speakers with Scanspeak drivers sound superior, no matter what design they were configured into and if there is a better tweeter than the Scanspeak Revelator out there then I haven't heard it.
Seas and Vifa are good also, but not in the same leagues as the Scanspeak IMO.

    YMMV.

Anyone who finds the above horn impressive should google Danley Matterhorn! 105 db @ 15 Hz at 250 metres! 40 large high excursion drivers with a 1kw amp each. It's the tapped horn extended to an extreme level.

I have quite a few favourites. AE speakers - nice boutique drivers combining the best of hifi and pro drivers. Beyma - great value pro drivers with good data sheets and drivers that are very usable for hifi use. B&C. I'm planning to use these in my next speaker upgrade.

Focal - a shame they aren't being made now.

Exodus audio - amazing value and a very sensible mix of parameters, hard to beat for conventional sub drivers.

Scan Speak - I think they have a "just right" mix with their drivers.

Seas - they seem to at least be as good as everyone else on comparable drivers, and often just slightly better.

Peerless and Vifa - great value, very usable offering most of the performance of drivers costing at least twice as much.

Hasaudio, someone reported this post and pointed out that you carry Accuton drivers in your webpage. I am not interested in discussing why you are soliciting "opinions" for a brand that you carry, except that it looks to me as if you are trying to market your drivers on the sly. Take a look at the site guidelines (at the top) and please make sure you comply. Advertising is not allowed anywhere on SNA by anybody, not even SNA sponsors. The only exception is within the sponsor subforum. For a first time offence - you only get a warning.

(edit post) this is the second out of three offences within a 24 hour period. Hasaudio has been suspended for a week.

In the light of Keith's comments, it is probably a wise move to cease being disingenuous and not spam these forums.
When I posted earlier, I had no idea of your purpose and answered in good faith to what I thought was a genuine question from an SNA member and not a commercial interest.

I don't have a favourite driver company since it all comes down to implementation, especially given the large variation within a particular model let alone two different models from the one manufacturer. Put yourself in the shoes of the driver manufacturer who is trying to make the very best one size fits all tweeter, midrange, mid-bass, woofer, etc, at each price point. They have no idea how each of their drivers will be used (or as is more often the case, abused). This is not to say that one can't buy some very nice drivers that fit the intended bill very well indeed but when one designs their own drivers to suit the intended application, you just might be onto something that is a cut above.

Never heard of them until now, but given your handle, and the fact that this thread seems to be a type of marketing that is neither up front or fair to SNA....the name has a negative attached to them when I hear it, now. Even more so when I hear the business name "hasaudio.co.nz".

Not doing yourself or the business any favours with such an approach.

56, I've never heard of any of their drivers except in Whise subs. Speaker drivers made in Melbourne is a novel concept!!!
