Although the best image is inevitably available for those occupying a ‘hot seat’ equidistant from the two speakers, the Blade still gives a remarkably good image around and between the speakers. Furthermore, walk around the room and the character of the sound remains very consistent and stable, which is actually quite remarkable when compared to nearly all the competition. The tonal balance is beautifully smooth, open, evenhanded and neutral as long as your room is big enough to handle them. The Onkyo is not going to gel so great with the LS50's in my opinion. There have been multiple suggestions on this thread that perform better in the real world with those speakers : - Arcam, Cambridge, Exposure, NAD, Rotel....

I have a set of the Marquis they are C4000 as the model. I am told that means they are from the late 90's rather than the model from the late 80's, but I'm not really sure. Sent from my SGP611 using Tapatalk

Hi @weavzy I have several cartridges in my collection - as well as recently having gone to an Ortofon demo night last month at one of the Hi-Fi stores here in Perth. We all got to hear the Ortofon 2m bronze/blue/black/red and Quintet range on the night too. The 2M Bronze definitely didn't sound thin, however, it was a touch sharp up top, especially as we all agreed that the 2M Blue sounded the smoothest and most lovely on the mids (out of the 2M series) - at the expense of a tiny bit of bass punch/depth and soundstage size and a slightly rolled off top end. The Quintet Black MC was really very nice and balanced and was possibly the highlight of the night for me personally - it had a massive soundstage, a beautiful extended smooth airy treble and was really a very even handed sound - plenty of bass control and extension too .... the cheaper MC carts on the night seemed a little bass shy compared to nearly all the 2M series MMs. The 2M Black did sound a touch punchier through the drums and snares (compared to the Quintet Black) - more dynamic... more 'live' if you will....but a bit uneven and almost slightly sharp at the upper mids/treble compared to the Quintet black (we all commented that the 2M black sounded live and punchy through the drums and a little ragged across the whole spectrum compared to the Quintet Black that sounded bigger sound stage, more 3D and kind of sounded 'live in the studio off the master tape'. If you can find a second hand Shure V15mk3 or Mk4 they are classic cartridges that track like champions and are definitely smooth, warm (but not muddy or dull) and quite detailed and accurate... later on you can buy a Jico SAS and move the quality/detail up a notch (or buy one 2nd hand with a Jico SAS fitted already). If a Shure V15mk3 sounds thin in your system it is definitely something else causing it. Also, what phono pre are you using? Changing the phono pre can make a Huuuge difference, and if your'e using the one built into the Yamaha it is definitely worth trying an external one as I am sure you will find an improvement - Graham Slee, Parasound and Rega all have options within your budget as do Schiit. Have you also checked the tracking weight that you are you using with digital stylus scales? If yo track at 1.5g, I would suggest trying around 1.7g (this is within Ortofon Spec) as perhaps that is all you will need to do to get the top end tamed a tiny bit and the bottom end to fill out. There have been several good suggestions throughout this topic. I will add my 2 bits worth into it too The Arcam A29 amplifier is a great match with the KEF LS50 - it's class G power giving it huge dynamic range and nearly doubling of power from 8 --> 4 ohms. The Arcam amps give a huge soundstage and are slightly warm/smooth up top with a generous bottom end. Nearly every review makes mention of clas sleading dynamics and soundstage - the KEF LS50's are the same. Keep in mind that the KEF LS50's are approx. 6 ohms (dip to 4 ohms) and are capable of astonishing, world class dynamics (but can sound a bit weedy with an amp that isn't crash hot into low impedance speaker loads). You could then couple the amp with either the matching Arcam irDacII (USB, Bluetooth, coax and Optical) or the new R-Play streamer depending on your listening sources - both of these are well made, reliable and well reviewed pieces of equipment. The ARCAM A29 also has a decent headphone stage and a more than decent phono stage for turntable listening. Do check the amplifier's capabilities into a 4 ohm load, as with the KEF LS50's that can make the difference between solid sound and weedy and thin. The tweeter is internally vented to prevent potentially distorting high pressures from building up behind the dome. The ‘Z-flex’ cone surround around the mid/bass diaphragm limits secondary radiation. The midrange cone is made of aluminium to retain stiffness, and there’s also a damping ring to control resonances. The two KEF Eggs look identical at a glance, but this is actually a master-slave system. One does the heavy lifting and passes information to the other. The R400b subwoofer continues with the modern, polished external styling of the rest of the R series speaker range and also incorporates a brushed aluminium trim - this all combines to make it one of the most stylish looking subs I have seen pass through our showroom in the last decade. KEF also understand that nowadays the look of a product in your room can be as important as the sound. The R400b is incredibly compact so it fits into your room in a classy, elegant way - measuring a room friendly 365x330x351 mm it is easy to fit into any home theatre or Hi-Fi system without being a huge, ugly black box that dominates the room. Internally the R400b consists of a reinforced and solidly braced cabinet that houses two active opposed custom KEF 9” drivers. This set up is done so that both driver outputs cancel each other inside the cabinet thus minimizing vibration and consequently the muddy sound that uncontrolled vibration brings.
