  1. Perhaps I'm being retarded, but what are you saying exactly?
  2. Yes, but we can measure this effect. That you might hear it or not has no bearing on it existing or not.
  3. That speakers can burn in is a completely testable claim, it has nothing to do with inner ears.
  4. I'd like to see this submitted to peer-review. It's part of the scientific process and allows potentially unbiased third parties to verify results. The methodology does look sound, I was a little worried that driver temperature hadn't been accounted for, but since the measurements where taken after a considerable cool off period, that variable should be eliminated. Room temperature however, has not been. It's only fair that the room temperature should've been measured at the same time, as it's the only way of being sure it's not a factor. The only other area I've got any questions about is how the measurements taken, I don't know enough about it, but to speculate; If Fs measurements tend to have a lot of variance, and the person testing was biased, they might be liable to choose the lowest point in the Fs plot to draw their conclusions. This cherry-picking of data would allow someone to present an entirely false picture. Anyhow, those are my concerns, but I'm happy to take it at face value for now as so far this is the most rigorous test of burn in that I've seen.
  5. Hey guys, sorry for vanishing - it's been a crazy few weeks here. I'm probably going to get the mid-range drivers re-foamed. Although that may change if I turn up any leads at mobileelectronics.com.au. As it turns out, the three way speaker system isn't really anything special, the 3" midrange driver basically sits in the same chamber as the 5" bass driver. This can't have helped the aging driver at all.
  6. Sorry to ressurect this dead thread, but it would appear that LSK has dissapeared from the web. Their website is down.
  7. Hi guys, recently got my first car, a 1988 Porsche 944. Anyhow, as is typical in a 23 year old car, some of the speakers are damaged. Each door contains three drivers, a 5 inch bass driver, a 3 inch mid driver and a 1 inch tweeter. Both of the tweeters need replacement as the plastic casing has become brittle and started to cruble away, and the mid drivers also need replacing because the foam/fabric spider has turned into some kind of paste. Some pictures: As you can see, the tweeter can no longer be mounted to the door, although I may be able to get around it with some large washers. The mid driver on the other hand is a little bit more difficult, there are not meny 3 inch drivers as square these, the closest I've come to a fit it this Hi-Vi driver. The driver is 79mm side to side, with a roughly 77mm cut out and the corner mounting holes are almost 90mm apart (centre of hole). Anyhow, do you think the Hi-Vi drivers will fit? And what about sound quality... I wish I could find specs on the original drivers.
  8. I recently tried to purchase a Spider Rack from COEM, but apparently they're out of stock so John refunded my purchase. Talking to John in email I wasn't able to get any answers on when he'd have them back in stock :S
  9. I've changed my layout a bit, instead of a normal sitting level desk, I've now setup a bar, complete with stools. Also, note the temporary amplifier rack that the Emotiva is sitting on, anticipating delivery of my new spider rack any day now.
  10. kunalraiker, buy the bose system, have it independently verified, if it indeed does suck, buy a white van and sell it for 10x the price you paid for it.
  11. Sorry to butt in here, but Paul, what about 18" Peavey Pro Audio drivers? They seem like a fantastic steal, but wouldn't the FS be a problem if you're trying to use these at lower frequencies?
  12. Time for some heavy metal... First up, I'd suggest Sodom - Tombstone; it has some seriously massive bass guitar sounds, and a short "war zone" interlude in the middle which is the only thing I've played that has brought my system to clipping. Secondly, Sepultura - Inner Self; recorded in 1989 it has a rather good high guitar tone which should make your innards turn to mush if played correctly. Thirdly, Vadar - Helleluyah!!! (God is Dead); Much more modern sound, not much variation in volume, but instead an incredible amount of guitar distortion. You shouldn't feel well after listening to this.
  13. I don't mean to be a naysayer, but I'm more than a little disturbed by the prices of some of these cables. If you're paying more than $10 per meter for cable, and the manufacturer cannot point to any scientific studies (not scientific sounding marketing bullshit), then you are most likely getting ripped off. Hearing may be believing, but with such little plausibility to some of the claims made for these types of cables, it's probably all in your head. Or perhaps you upgraded from cable that was truly awful, or perhaps your terminals are corroded.
  14. Paul, it looks to me as though the top two drivers (one single cone, one dual cone) are meant to produce what you hear, and the bottom driver is wired opposite providing some kind of suction, or release of pressure from the cabinet. I could see it producing higher sound at a greater efficiency, except for the fact that the bottom driver would seem to cancel part of the top two drivers signal. Here's one sentence I found on the website about it: This is most puzzling, and definitely not meant for casual reading.
  15. Of course. What data sheet btw? Edward actually rated mine at 90.5db @ 1w/1m.
  16. Yeah, I know, I may just ask Edward for a pair of subs using the 10" drivers, I really like how they sound. I judge the "musical" bass response by its ability to handle fast, but deep, double kicks. Death metal is demanding!
  17. Yeah, I'd buy from them again, and put me in the Adelaide Speakers + Emotiva group too. Mine are similar, but slightly smaller than the speakers you're considering, they have wonderful clean bass, it's like my mains are my subwoofers. Edward actually recommended the 1093 over the 1203, said that the 10 inch driver was a little more 'musical', but you know what? I'm considering buying a pair of 1203 to get even crazier bass response for movie/sci-fi watching. I'm sure they'd sound just as good. As for the ribbons and mid, they are quite quite good also, although I think a little more mid range wouldn't go astray for the most crunchy of heavy metal guitars. What Paul said about efficiency also rings true, although mine are different to the 1203s, the efficiency is definitely less than my previous speakers which also had the same sensitivity rating. I'm not sure it's as extreme as 85db, I'd guesstimate about 89db. Either way, a 60w Cambridge Audio amp wasn't quite enough grunt, hence the Emotiva XPA-2.

  19. I'm skeptical that it's really worth $100K, I'd still like to hear it though.
  20. Does bright mean lacking in bass and mids? Also, what does forward mean?
  21. Let me again point out the ridiculous grin on my face every time I give this thing the beans.
  22. I've had my XPA-2 for a few days now, it's connected as a power amp to my CA, which sounds brilliant in its own, but cannot drive my speakers hard enough while playing heavy metal. One band in particular posed a problem, Arch Enemy tend to have highly compressed mixes that sound fantastic on headphones but not so much out loud. So when I was just using the CA and trying to reach volumes where the bands recordings sound good, it would just break apart and sound way too harsh. After adding the XPA-2 I can finally hear the music more or less as it is on my headphones. I also have to say, the bass output of this thing is outstanding, kick drums, snares and toms really stand out, you can feel them in your chest and and they sound so warm. The closest I've come to reaching the limits of my system was while playing Melvins - Queen, which is a very bassy track. All in all, I think it was a very well spent $900.
  23. I've just added a power amp, an Emotive XPA-2 - here is a dodgy iPhone video to celebrate this tremendous occasion: http://vimeo.com/18492744
