In Topic: $200 Headphone budget and $200 dac/amp first timer

None of the suggestions above really suit your budget but if you're capable of sprucing for the extra, I think they are saying it's worth it.

I would say with that kind of budget you're better off getting a decent headphone first then spring for a amp/dac once you have a bit more money down the track.

For example, a HiFiMan HE-400 doesn't really need amping to sound good and can run off a laptop straight without too much issues. It costs $419 from memory in Australia (can be had for $409 from minidisc.com.au but not sure about reliability). Then you could get the O2 DAC/Amp or something similar once you have some more money.

That's my 2c.

In Topic: Looking for some advice on AVRs for a new starter

01 December 2012 - 05:18 PM

Hi BB and Andrew,

Thanks for your input. I suppose I'm looking down the track where eventually I plan on upgrading the speakers (and buying rears) so it would be nice to already have an AVR already there. However, it appears I'm getting way ahead of myself and would be better off buying rears and newer speakers (especially the centre) before investing into an AVR.

I am mostly a music man, with the occasional movie but can't really say I'm a cinemaphile (that's probably not a word).

I think my best bet would be to save my dollars for now, save money for some decent speakers then look at an AVR then, since AVRs get updated every year.

I suppose this has been a waste of a thread so apologies for that :(

Thanks again guys! Hope you're well Andrew and thanks for the generous offer :)
