Amplifier Repairs southern Adelaide

11 February 2012 - 11:06 AM

Hey Guys, I have an amplifier in need of some attention and am having problems locating a repair place in the southern part of Adelaide.
I used to take my gear to Umatic Services in St. Marys but it looks like they have closed down a shame because I found them very good.
I had heard of someone else off of Seacombe rd. but dont have an address, any one know of a good repairer down this way?

Wanted: Someone in Manly or surrounds to pick up floor standing speakers

07 January 2012 - 08:21 AM

I require a kind soul who would have the time to pick up a pair of floor standing speakers approximately 1000mm x 750mm and store them long enough for me to arrange transport to Adelaide. A big ask but thought I would put the question out there. PM if you can help. It would be about a week before pick up would be required. Thanks.

Grado Prestige Silver vs. Ortofon 2m Bronze

23 October 2011 - 06:20 AM

A while ago I picked up a Grado silver from Audiogon with 50 hours on it for a very good price (just a little more than I paid for the 5e), with great excitement I waited for it to arrive as the best cartridge I had in the past was an Ortofon 5e.
The cartridge arrived and i was suitably impressed, no Grado hum and the sounds coming from my speakers was mellow at times but very clear and precise.
At least I thought so at the time, not having anything to compare it to other than the 5e.
Travel forward in time 6 months and I was trawling ebay and spotted an Ortofon 2m bronze with 100 hours on it, bids upto a little over $100 with only a few hours to go, needless to say I whacked a few dollars on it (like 2) and was high bid.
At this point in time I considered it a very unlikely winning bid, but hey, stranger things happen.
Short long story, the Cartridge rocked up and having installed it, all I can say is WOW.
The 2m Bronze doesn't appear to colour the music at all, It's precise, clear and very musical, some records I play have some very deep bass in them and after comparing the two cartridges I would say the grado muddies some of the base notes compared to the Ortofon.
In all I think the Ortofon is my new favourite.
As a side note knowing what the Ortofon retails for and what I ended up getting it for, I feel a little guilty and sorry for the previous owner, as the cartridge really should have sold for a lot more than it went for, but then again that is the pitfalls/windfalls of ebay.

An old newby needs guidance.

Hey guys, bear with me but I'm a bit of a stick in the mud when it comes to electronics.  I must admit i like my records.
I see a lot of references to DAC, and have for some time now been tossing up whether to add some type of mp3, flac, ape player to my set up.
I may have this wrong but a DAC doesn't store the MP3? am I correct?
I have plugged a psp3000 into my amplifier and i find the screen handy to see what is playing.
Is there a larger size unit that will store the audio on a Hard drive and then play it through my amp and also show navigation of the stored files. All at a reasonable price if there is such an animal?
From my understanding a logitech squeeze box is sort of what i am after but am I correct in saying that it doesn't store anything and streams from a PC.
This would not be suitable as I do not always have the pc on.
Let me know of any setups, modifications to existing available products that may be available.

Help to Identify Marantz speakers

29 June 2011 - 03:28 PM

Sorry guys no pics with this one, I was down the local thrift shop and spotted a set of Marantz floor speakers.  The tag showed them as 70w and the woofers were approximately  14 inches, centred at the bottom of the speaker.  On top of the woofer, the tweeter and midrange were centred in the speaker above each other and encased with a gold plastic cover.  The brown cloth grills were set so that the speaker box had a small top lip that overhung the cover. Possibly late 70's to 80's.
The woofers needed new surrounds but for $9.99 worth saving?  I don't have the room for them but anyone know what model they might be?
