New DAC or OPPO 105

Im starting to look around for an upgrade to my digital end.

I'm pretty set on the NAD DAC or the OPPO 105 but not sure what performs better. I do like the idea of a box solution, but it is not a priority by any means.

I'm slightly inclined to the OPPO as it can play SACDs and unwittingly I have built up a collection of maybe 30-40, many of which I have given the CD layer a decent workout.

Anybody have experience with either of these units? Or can recommend anything similar?

Better yet...anybody directly compared the two?

FWIW I currently have the Eastern Electric Minimax

Ascension Loudspeakers- any owners of the newer models?

Looking around for some high sensitivity speakers I had a visit to adelaidespeakers.com

they seem to have some (newish, i think) models which look very interesting.

The first that caught my eye was the 'valve' series, high efficiency line of speakers, which are all around 96db efficient.

The second was the flagship- the Transcender, which certainly has the looks of an ultra high end speaker.

I have looked at these speakers a few times, but only recently noticed these new additions.

ALl the speakers seem to be very reasonably priced...

So has anybody listened to them or bought a pair?

Recommend me a DAC!

What sorts of DACs exist that give a ballsy dynamic sound.

Im not too familiar with dacs as Im primarily a vinyl guy. I have the WE dac recommended on Darko's site but I still find that Im not really getting close to the level of overall satisfaction from my CDs as I do from my vinyl.

although vinyl is my primary medium I dont really buy in the debate of vinyl inherently sounding better, but would rather think that each medium perhaps reflects the equipment that it is played on. Ive got quite a good stack of CDs that I want more from but have no idea where to look.

priorities are dynamics, naturalness, tone, energy etc (ie. not resolution, flat freq. response)

From what I can gather the audionote dacs could be the direction I look in but there must be more dacs built in a similar way.

any ideas or suggestions are welcome

thanks

oh yeh- doesnt have to be a dac, a cd player would do just find as well

headshell screws- Will any do?

17 August 2012 - 12:20 PM

A dl-103 arrived today, and I was most excited to give it a go. I've been listening with a 17d3 for a while now and wanted to try something at the opposite end of the sound, and price spectrum

All set up and ready to go- but the dl-103's screws arent long enough to get through the thick end of the Analogue Instruments Apparition tonearm.

So off to bunnings tonight to get some screws.

What preferences should I have? Alluminium, alloy, brass?

thanks folks

I've currently got Zu omens and i love them!

saw these in some flicks from the US newport show

There are new matching subwoofers as well.

Looking forward to seeing what the reviews say and how they compare to the Omens. I love how they look in this colour as well...
