In Topic: Evil nasty rubber mats

I use a carbon mat on one of my TTs, it always develops static. I use a rubber mat on a TT sitting next to it on the same shelf (in the same room of course), it develops very little if any static.

Mats do not seem to be the issue. I think I need to check that the tonearm/platter earth contact is being made properly on the first deck....

I'm interested - streaming might be a good theme, I don't do it at all ... yet... :)

Didn't someone post about SQ improvements when they moved to SS disk drives in their PC? How about streaming from it then, does the speed of the wireless protocol affect it too? I don't know enough about this stuff. I put my stuff on a thumb drive and stick it in the squeezebox, lol.

In regards to the print out protractors; how do you cut out the spindle hole perfectly round? And with the Conrad's how can you measure from the spindle to the pivot precisely? Arn't we talking about a very precise operation here, surely a spindle hole that's not concentric or 0.5mm error in measuring the spindle to pivot distance is going to put things out?

I am very much a newbie to all this and I'm all for DIY to keep the costs down, but to me it sounds very easy to get an error and place the grid 1-2mm out?

Would something like this http://www.turntable....com/align.html work any better than a print out version(to scale of course)?

For a print-out protractor you don't really need to cut a round hole. You just cut two straight lines at 90 degrees to each other on the very edges of the hole location. Cut them a bit longer than you think you need, but not where the cuts join, those should just meet each other. Then you fit it over the spindle, and it 'flaps' up - so not a hole, but the location will be right.

If you think you'll re-use it you can reinforce the edges of the cuts with sellotape.
