Hi guys, thanks.

I might have them assemled this weekend, the weather is crap for any hope of painting the black or the stand but i need to put them in th frame as now it is awkward to move them around without scratching them.

And then the're is the K horns to build.

I think the ceiling of Sistine Chapel was painted in less time than these.

Looking forward to seeing the stand as mine is a similar design. It will be interesting to see someone else's mounting of them.

No photos yet - paint was too wet to assemble.

The stand is looking reasonably good, i also have the mid horns fully painted - red horn with black tube. They look fantastic :thumb: .The midbass horns are about to have their tubes painted black :party .

I have to paint one of the midbass horns in red again, i wasn't too happy with the first result  , blocked it back painted it again - this time it was really good, took it outside to air dry and a gust of wind blew big specs of dust over it :(. I tried to fix it and completley stuffed it    f%@#*&@! .

So back to blocking it back and painting it red again.

Poor bastard. I know the feeling with that. Painting is one of my pet hates. One of these days I'll buy another house with a garage so I do it properly.

I love painting when you get a good result.

These horns, being so big, they take a bit of focus to get right and then you have to hope there are no runs of patchy areas. you need an open area, the amount of overspray floating around and settleing needs to be in a confined space and the fumes - my goodness i'm so glad i use a respirator.

And then you are at the mercy of something happening like the wind. I could not believe it, the wind was calm before hand and it was like it did it on purpose.

This is my horns, don't forget i have two more for someone else waiting in the corner for a coat of paint!

Busy weekend;

I have an Uno Trio that is a bit of a Duo without its tweeter (if that makes sense). I have to work a bit more on setting up the mid horn and making it more solidly secure. Once this is done i start assembling the other one after i repaint its midbass horn.

Cheers.

It looks very nice. Just one question, how did you get the back part of the horn so smooth ?.

Cheers,
Michael.

Thanks, the answer is allot of sanding/filling/sanding/filling/sanding/hifill/sanding/hifill/sanding.............

My pair (big horns) are litle bit more rippley around the back edges than the other pair i have also built. Those came out heaps flatter around the edje because i spent more time on them and they were for my mate which meant that i had to do a better job!

When i did mine, i did them in half the time and i wasn't too fussy about it having some 'ripples' arone the rear edge. the main surface on the back is fine and the join between horn and cylinder came out really nice.

The face of the horn was already perfect, the hard part was painting them.

I could have got special brackets made, i thought i'd just use what was readily available and if is a very pratical way of adjusting the mechanical timing.

Looks great. Like everyone else I love the colour.
Cheers Mike

Ta, it really stands out but is not too bright.and i'm glad i chose it. Plus i have a red wall in my room which meand they really fit in well.

I don't think i will be putting any red on the TT, did think about it though.

I now have my digital crossover to control them - i just assembled it and love the way you program it on the laptop, fantastic stuff and so much flexibility which is what i really needed to control these horns. Can't wait to fire them up.

Hi Guys,

I've made significant progress, in went the sand......

On went the Fane & Compression drivers........

Out came all the amplifiers, RCA cables, plugs, cords, anything i could hook up to set up the horns activley.

The result;

I just wanted to see if it worked and in the end it was a big surprise. At first, it sounded ok, but as the wife put it 'it didn't sound better than her Ferguson Hill horns' - I borrowed her ears.

I set the crossover points to what already was designed for the horns i bought. Then played with slopes on the fly and then the levels. The wife helped with the feedback and within 30mins we had them singing well and truley beyond the Ferguson Hills.

The rest of the weekend was just about playing music and i have not changed a setting since. The next task is to measure them and adjust the finer specs, time allignment and levels more accuratley.

I am so happy my Osborns are now for sale, these horns exceeded my expectations from day one.

I have yet to have special brackets made up for them, they need to be adjustible for the time allignment. I'd better get cracking, the osborns are not going to be around by the time the weekend hits.

I will be constructing Klipsch Khorns to do that job and the Klipsch subwoofer (in the photo) will possibly be used to assist.

I have brand new K33 drivers from Klipsch i'm keen to use.

The subwoofer works really well at the moment, but in theory i should have faster bass working with the midbass horns.

Spent quite a few hours on the week end playing music, fiddled a tiny bit on slopes on the crossover and opend up the midbass a bit. The next appropriate thing is to really measure them properly which is what i will do when i mount the tweeters on to the frame.

I'm realy happy with the sound, very open detailed and lovely. The drivers all integrate well as one, i'm not getting sound coming out of individual points only which is terrific.

Once the measurements are done it should intergrate really well and increase the depth of field as it will be focussed much more precicsely.

Also, i,ve been enjoying the soundsmith straingauge, very nice open sound and the combination of this and the horns is really showing how fantastic and crap some pressings are. I've been disappointed in some records - it really does come down to the way the release of the material has been made rather than if vinyl or cd is better.

Hi Tuyen,

Bass 150hz, midbasshorn 372hz, midhorn 2138hz

slopes, midbass 18db, mid 48db.

These are only from playing around by ear, when it gets measured i'm sure everything will end up being different.

New addition to the DIY horn project,

I now have a Yamaha P3500s rack amplifier to drive the 18" subs - 350w cont, looking forward to revving that one up!

Almost there on the tuning bits, i will have the horns measured soon and final adjustments made. At the moment they sound wonderful which will be exciting to see what they will be like when they are 100% tuned.

Thanks guys for your comments, i have to pinch myself when i listen to them as i'm wrapped.

Yes NiKO, you are welcome to come over, I will get you and Mal around once the measurements are done. I have Mal's pre at my place and will fire it up on the horns as well. It is going to be interesting as i tried it on the weekend on another system of mine and the transparency was fantastic.

All goes well, that special DAC might be ready from Lucas and we can play with that too!
