New Gary Numan box set out and ordered. A follow up to the outstanding 78/79 boxset from Vinyl 180.

GARY NUMAN - 80/81 BOX SET
Posted Image

This 5 disc boxed set completes the "Machine Series" started in 1978 and includes Telekon spread over 2 180g vinyl discs and the Living Ornaments ‘81 live album as a 3 LP set. The five discs are packed in individual heavyweight sleeves with inner bags all housed in a matt black box with the iconic red parallel belts printed in a gloss red.

Telekon, remastered from the original analogue tapes, is released for the first time as a double album and includes two tracks, We Are Glass and I Die: You Die, released as singles but omitted from the original album as a cost cutting measure. The discs are packaged in two individual album sleeves with inner bags featuring lyrics and sleeve notes just for this boxed edition.

Living Ornaments ‘81, remastered and spread across three 180g vinyl discs, was recorded on the last night at Wembley Arena on April 28th 1981 and at the time was intended to be Numan’s farewell to live performance. The songs from the show cover a whole period from Tubeway Army through Replicas and The Pleasure Principle to Telekon and the future single She’s Got Claws from his next album Dance. This concert is considered to be, by many fans and critics alike, one of Numan’s most charismatic live performances. Again these discs are packaged in individual album sleeves with inner bags and are only available in this boxed edition.

That's a sweet looking set there Jake - beautiful design.
I just ordered this from the excellent Numero Group. The Boddie Record company box set. A ma and pa recording studio out of Cleveland Ohio, which recorded obscure soul and gospel acts.

Portico Quartet: Isla

Someone mentioned this in the currently spinning thread. I streamed it, and really enjoyed the listen.
Just ordered the vinyl version.

A blurb about the album:
2010 release from the British Jazz/World outfit. From a grassroots start in 2005, busking on London’s South Bank, Portico Quartet's reputation spread swiftly. Their 2007 debut, Knee Deep In The North Sea, attracted attention from DJs, bloggers and critics, and was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize. Isla is a thoughtful and richly tuneful collection of nine pieces recorded by producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Doves, XTC, Radiohead) at Abbey Road studios. Portico Quartet sound like nobody else in Jazz, World or contemporary music. Each of the nine tracks on Isla has a distinct mood and atmosphere, thanks to the use of the hang, a tuned percussion instrument, they have a sound that is instantly attractive, yet uncompromisingly individual.

I got the 4 disc version (2 CDs / 2 DVDs). I didn't know there was a 5 disc version. Prices seem to vary wildly from store to store though. I paid $30 for mine from a small local CD shop here in Adelaide, but I've seen prices as high as $48. There is also a weblink on one of the DVDs, if you pop it into your computer. It looks like they are adding downloadable mp3 files of live recordings each month. There were two tracks available when I last looked.

(I'm talking about David Gilmour, Live In Gdansk, of course.)

I got one of the CD versions. Can't remember if it is the 4 or 5 disc version. Borders was selling off all of their CDs when I was in there one day. Any three CDs for $30. So essentially, I got the 4(or 5) disc set for $10!

What reviews did it get? It's a great album I think, and the band is fantastic!!! Saw them twice in Melbourne... Wasn't that keen on her later stuff in the beginning but this and The Greatest are very fine albums...

Hunky Dory EMI 100 pressing sounds amazing. Taken from analogue masters unlike many the first half of the EMI 100 series which are digital. Hoffman forums reckon it's the closest to an original UK pressing.

3 CDs, all from the Music Maker Foundation. For those who don't know, this is a non-profit foundation set up to record and care for generation of aged and often unwell bluesmen and women. A part of their brief is blues promotion and they have a large range of CDs under their own label. The CDs are recorded very well, if only more CDs had as much care put into them. It's even more amazing that they cost $12 each.

G'day,

Some records wot I picked up today for $1 each:

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Rapoon - Just Say The Faith -- never heard this LP before, but I have heard Rapoon, who does a kind of ambient/world/tribal thang.
Various Artists - RooArt: Young Blood -- a compilation of Aussie indie acts from the late 80s, including Trilobytes, Tall Tales & True, Who's Gerald? (precursor to Custard), The Hummingbirds, etc. Kinda surprising to find this in downtown SLC.
Huxton Creepers - 12 Days To Paris -- another late 80s Aussie indie act, another surprise find.
Marillion - Season's End -- just for Batty. I already have this back in Oz.
Bill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra -- Bill Evans takes a stab at classical. Not sure how this will sound ... like a lounge version of Jaques Loussier Trio, perhaps?

I'm still on my "streaming music via the internet only" experiment, so I shan't be playing these for a while yet.

Joan Jett is a guilty pleasure, love the Runaways

I've had this on CD for years and it's my have Beirut album so I couldn't resist when I saw it on vinyl.

I just can't get enough of Serge. One of the most bizarre concept albums of all time, it tells the story of a man who falls in love with an African 'shampooiste', murders her and then goes insane:) Strangely compelling and his best album since Histoire de Melody Nelson, his album he recorded after reading Lolita. Despite the perverse themes, it's great music.

regards Michael
