Curved OR Flat projector screen

Recommended Posts

Iv started looking around for home theater upgrades...At the moment I have a 120 16;9 flat fixed screen for my Epson eh-tw3500 :)..We are in the process in building a new home meaning a new HT room :) cant wait..  Its going to measure 4x7 eg from seating position its 7m long 4.3 m wide..

a room this size I think il go bigger screen 140" curved... Would this be a good option or just run a flat 140 fixed screen?? or bigger 150 lol

and would anyone know how far I would need the projector if I run 140inch..

At the moment im running about 5m away from my wall projecting 120inch and its perfect, with a room length 6m.

curved screens are really only a necessity if going a scope lens....to remove the distortion created by the optics.

most people zoom for scope these days...and even the older scope lenses where distortion was an issue they sell corrector lens to remove.

so unless particularly needed ...its not a necessity and a flat screen will do just fine.

additionally I would question whether a 140" screen will get you enough light off your epson....keeping it on its most lowest lamp power...whcih is necessary if want to maintain colour accuracy/naturalness and also helps black levels :)

as far as how far you would need to sit the projector consider checking the epson site they have always had a comprehsive calculator allowing for all parameters.

also important is the main listening position..this is important not only for immersion...and also not sacrificing audio wise :)

To give you a rough idea Obama, the below photo is of my HT room. Approx 5m wide by 8m deep, with seats at 5m and 7m from screen. The screen is a fixed, flat 130" CinemaScope, and I feel is a pretty good size for the room. Very immersive. Zoomed out for CinemaScope, my JVC X700 is close to the limits of adequate light output, so glad I didn't go any larger. Didn't feel any need to go curved, and don't think it would make any noticeable difference.

Ahhhh, no diffusers in yet Obama. Which photo do you think you see them in? Room treatments still a bit of a way off - awaiting centre, subs and surrounds then we'll measure and treat.

Those two rows of IMG chairs were about $15k delivered and installed.

15k wow they must be very comfy..

I was reading your old post I must of read it wrong my bad....

How high is your ceiling?? mine will be 2.7

They're very nice chairs - motorised, lots of storage, very comfortable and premium leather. You don't need to spend that much though. Lots of options out there at significantly less.

Ceiling is 3.3m at front of room, dropping to 3m at the back where seating is stepped up, then 2.7m at very back where ceiling lowers for ventilation ducts where you see the door.

Thanks mate....Mine will be 2.7 in your opinion would you have a step down?

Just looking at yours I cant wait for mine :)

If you want two rows of seats, the split levels are quite a good idea. Gives back seats a chance to lay back without interfering with view of screen, and means screen doesn't have to be too high for visibility from back row.

We incorporated levels in our slab pour, but you could also just create a timber plinth if your initial build has a flat floor.

how does it sound so far?

Speakers are SGR MT3.2, and they're brilliant. That said, having listened to them in the room for almost 6 months now, the room acoustics are clearly limiting their full potential. The room is very well sound insulated (quietwave membrane in gyprock sandwich and slab above ceiling), so wall/ceiling treatments are going to make significant improvements.

I have a row of 3 of the same chairs. Love em, wife is always falling asleep in the HT room though...

I've been known to check the inside of my eyelids every now and then after a glass or two of red and some fine tunes......very comfortable chairs indeed.
