kdoot
All the DLNA things. I think these days they're *starting* to work nicely with each other. Many "smart" TVs have a network connection and the DLNA bits built in to them now, though the quality of implementation and user interface varies greatly. oldrose
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Center_Extender Come in a variety of flavours. As kdoot says, the quality of the implementation and user interface varies greatly. None of them work as well as the ATV in my experience but.... they do play a broader range of file formats. I get around this by converting to a playable format, which is becoming less relevant as most online content is now available in H.264 formats (presumably thanks to the proliferation of iPhones and iPads). myPal
Media centre is still there with Windows 8.1 Pro, if you want to use it as a media hub. The thing I love about the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 is the ability to sling media from the device to an IPTV wirelessly. So, if you have HDMI channel passthru from your IPTV to your surround system, it is an awesome way to flick through any content delivery on an ad hoc basis. For example, YouTube or Facebook videos, pictures, music sampling etc. My IPTV is wired via ethernet to CAT 6 specification to a Dell GB managed switch. I run 802.11AC dual band mimo WiFi with QoS priority. This network configuration doesn't miss a beat. Hanging off that network is a Synology 1513+ that is Link aggregated (802.3ad). Seriously, matched with decent infrastructure, Windows 8.1 is unbeatable. We are progressively ditching Apple IOS devices. The latest 8.1.1 is proving to be a frustration in comparison to the latest Windows devices. Edited November 29, 2014 by myPal
DoggieHowser
Microsoft has something similar but uses the Xbox range. The X360 and X1 all have ability to stream music and video plus get access to on demand material as needed. I used to subscribe to their Zune music service and it was pretty good actually. The Zune itself was also capable of producing some decent SQ
