Burson "Supreme Sound" Discrete Opamp Replacements.

I've been running in a pair of the new, 4th Generation, of Bursons' Discrete Opamp replacements, dubbed the "Supreme Sound" Opamps and I'm enjoying them.  They seem a little smoother than the standard OPA2604 chips that came standard with my Consonance cd120 player.

Once I'm happy that they have "run in" I'll give them a run against the 3rd gen discrete opamps and see if I can tell the difference, so far the performance of the 4th gen discretes are reminding me of what I remember hearing when I was trialing the 3rd gen pair so I'm expecting similar performance.

One thing I am happy about is that the dip 8 adapter (shown on the 3rd gen module in the pic below but not on the 4th gen, for whatever reason) on the 4th gen is only pressed in so you can remove it and take 5mm or so off the height of the overall module, this means it will actually fit inside the case of the Consonance without me having to add a couple of layers of felt to lift up the top of the case.  I see this as a very big improvement.

I stole this pic from the Burson web site, mine are stuck inside the Consonance at the moment.

Has anyone given these new, 4th gen, discrete opamps a run against the 3rd gen ones?  Or against anything else for that matter?

Not quite sure what you mean.. what do you mean by the 8 adapter can be removed and pressed in?

Did you solder the 4th gen directly onto your CDP or?

No, you reckon it's a worthwhile upgrade over the 3rd gens?

I'm running 3x 3rd gen ones on a Asus STX (PC streaming) and do have a second stock STX to compare...

This latest version looks to be physically smaller. Will go home and measure up and see if the 4th gen is easier to fit on the STX (esp if can fitted without flyleads)..

Did you get 'em directly from Burson Audio or from partsexpress?

If you have a look at the pic in my post the 4th module is shown with just pins on the bottom of it whereas the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen have their pins shoved into a dip 8 connector.  The 4th gen comes with one of these as well but they come off easily, I could never get them off the 3rd gen modules so I have to assume they are soldered on.

No soldering required for me in this case, the Consonance has its opamps mounted on push in dip 8 clips so opamps can be removed and changed nice and easily.  I know soldering makes for a better connection but it gets pretty old pretty quick if you want to compare several opamps.

I just ordered them via the Burson website, that's where I order everything Burson (prior to that I think it was ebay).

The bursons are overpriced for what it is. Lme47920ha/990 for free is better sounding.

Is that same, or different from the LME47920NA? What device did you try that on that's better than the Bursons? Better sounding in what way?

Don't have the HA, but pretty sure I have 2x or 4x of the NAs somewhere.. I'd see if I can find 'em again and try it on the spare sound that I have.

<OT rantz>

As for overpriced. Everything is overpriced.. From op amps to houses.. So many things to buy, so little money.. :(

If it's up to me I'd abolish capitalism and profit making be made a criminal act. Everybody should have enough to get by and nothing more.. (And I'm not joking or being sarcastic here). And I don't mean socialism or communism either. Give me a few more decades to come up with a new economics model. Already have a name for it - minimalism.

Where the hell can I buy them. I can't find a site who sells them.

http://www.bursonaudio.com/creations/discrete-opamp/

Go to the bottom, then the 2nd tab, select buy now (if getting 1 or 2).. Any other number, you gotta email 'em, then pay-pal the total amount over. That's how I did it for the 3rd gen anyway. been a while but hopefully still the same..

I reckon "I'd just get by with a couple of hundred thousand dollars per year to satisfy my music / audio passion."  Is that okay in the myrantz' economic model?  :P

Cheers,

Alan
