Oil type for spindle bearing? speed issue

Hi guys,

I have an Audio Research AR11 table here that belongs to a friend and is running slow, i think It's the bearing and need to know what oil to use?

It appears to be the same, but not exactly like the Sonab 85s and the Yamaha YP-400....maybe all mad at least in part by Yamaha, as far as I figure.

Any ideas, would singer sewing machine oil be OK?

You will get all types of suggestions and theories but a good quality fully synthetic oil will provide better lubrication and will not gum up like mineral oils can. The viscosity is an other issue and I have seen raging arguments on the net between alleged lubrication experts arguing about whether high or low viscosity oils are best done claiming they can hear the differences between them.

But a decent synthetic oil with minimal additives ( lower viscosity range) will do the trick nicely.

I just spent the last eight months evaluating various oils for my turntable. I now have about 20 very expensive little bottles of various oils all purported to be the best there is.

Strangely enough, the best oil I have found to date is one I was able track down as a result of a joke from AndyR. which led me to what I consider the best turntable lubricant EVAH!

I'd be happy to send you enough to lubricate your bearing in exchange for some performance feedback. PM me if you want to play!

Thanks guys, we did try a high quality oil, can't recal what It's properties was but was good for a bit then reverted very quick.

I have my old Sonab 85s and the spindle is identical and in better shape so a transplant is in order I think!

The AR one felt gritty :(

So I'll see how this goes but will look at oils also. and will consider that offer Number 9

Weeeell, yes, Steve - that's the best you have evaluated ... but you haven't tried what I told you to try!  Whale oil. ;)

I have used 2stroke oil in the past

That scares me a bit, but i could be missing out by not trying, will keep that one on the bench for the moment ;)

All suggestions will be considered, at the very least :)

Andy, the lubricant I propose is a wax that liquefies at room temperature. You were provided with a sample on the basis of strict confidentiality, you have no idea what the compound is in reality so therefore I suggest you STFU!

Surely baby Harp Seal oil would be better ; )

Well, that may well be the base, tele ... all I'm going on is that the early watchmakers (and ship-chronometer makers) used whale oil for lubrication ... I guess Canada hadn't been settled at that stage (by Europeans), so they didn't cull baby Harp seals, then?  It may well be a better oil - and probably easier to obtain than whale oil! ;)

Sure Andy, the use of whale based oil `products is a huge joke, you as a diver would surely see the funny side of this, me, not so much.....

But at least I know now that you can not be trusted

Cheers

I do think that the Audio Research spindle bearing is either stuffed or has grit in it, more likely stuffed.

It doesn't sit as it does with the identical spindle from the Sonab.

See how it goes testing.

OK, it was OK at first, but the fault came again, I think it is the drive system, the motor to be exact, the .047uf cap reads in tolerance so maybe the motor Itself?

The Sonab motor looks very similar, but while the sonab is a straight 240v ac motor, the AR has a 100v with a transformer before it so it can be set to different mains in different countries... Bugger, have to look at the how it is setup more

Hang on, the sonab motor has an extra Yellow and black wire going to a tag on the strip that goes to nothing, maybe it can be wired for 100v....hmm....must look at this more.

It couldn't be the on/off switch, that would either work or not work...right  guys?

LOL @

While here, any ideas for me, moter/drive related?

:)

Edit: I will post some pics of internals, in case it helps someone help, but I'll try and work out if I can substitute the AR motor with the Sonab one.

Not into TT so I haven't tried it, but this is cheap enough to play around with. LOL the other die hard vinyl addicts will in no doubt make me a fool and have a field day out of this suggestion:

Hmm..don't say what it is really, and this "Wahl Professional Animal " is a bit odd :P

But cheers for the suggestion :)

I think it is the motor itself, as the Sonab spindle that is now fitted never ever gave me trouble and I never has speed issues, and sits how it should and feels smooth unlike the one that was in there. The suspension collapsed on the Sonab so was taken out of service, for that reason. I hope this AR has no suspension issues as I am a dud with even adjusting that stuff, but it seems more a motor drive issue at this point.

Works fine for the first track or so the get all warbley (new word)

Thanks, now my eyes hurt reading white oil and white oil.........and white oil and so on

:)

So It's a mineral oil, been warned away from the mineral type further up ;)

Nice to see what it actually is though :thumb:
