Sansui help....voltage

Ugly

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My little Sansui AU-101 arrived today and looks to be in good nick for its age. Before I plug it in though, I wanted to run a couple of things past the experts.

1. Voltage is set to 220v (as seen in one of the pictures below). It also has what looks to be an original sticker on the side that says 220v.  Is this ok for Australian sockets?

2. The power plug says 125v  (as seen in one of the pictures below). It looks to be an American plug but someone has bent the pins to fit in an Australian socket. Is this safe? Should I replace the plug or just bend it back into shape and use an adapter?

3. Is there anything else I should be checking?

Thanks in advance.

You can set the voltage to 240V. :)

Remove the screw holding the metal retaining bracket in place over the voltage selection 'plug'.

Re-orientate the plug so that the white line faces upwards and points towards the '240' marking on the rear panel.

Regarding the plug, it should be replaced with an appropriate AUS plug by a suitably qualified or experienced person.

If you're asking "SHOULD this amp be earthed internally", then the answer is 'very probably'. I see no double earthing symbols, so, for safety, it should be earthed.

That wasn't the question I was asking.  I was wondering whether Sansui amps intended for markets with two-pin plugs would be earthed as a matter of course, or whether the OP should have this done.

The Sansuis with 'figure' 8 power cables are not earthed as standard. I've compared earthed vs non-earthed versions of the same Sansui and there's no reason why a 3 conductor cable cannot be installed and appropriately wired into place to provide suitable earthing.

So it looks like changing the plug isn't the only thing that needs to be done.  If it were me I'd go the whole hog and have the amp earthed and have an IEC plug installed at the same time time if that's possible.

Hi,

Re the fitting of a 3 core mains cable. The existing plastic cable clamp (and the associated hole in the rear panel) is designed for the "flat" figure 8 cable used. If a round three core cable is going to be fitted, then the proper sized cable clamp bush should be used, and the "double D" hole in the chassis enlarged to maintain the correct cable clamping pressure (the double D hole shape should be preserved to prevent the cable/cable bush rotating). A round rubber bush/grommet can be used, but the cable should be internally restrained from putting strain on the internal connections, and from allowing the cable/cable grommet to rotate.

Re the checking of checking the DC offset, this amp is a capacitor coupled output design, and as such there is no adjustment for DC offset. If you do check for DC on the output, you need to put an 8 ohm load in place when taking the measurement.

Cheers

John

It depends to some extent on the amp and the customer. I don't replace the mains cable as a matter or course.

Your amp is a late model one ( manufactured Dec '73). It will most likely have bias adjustment trim pots on the main amp PCB, if you want to check the bias current let me know, the procedure and the bias current value is not shown in the service manual.

Cheers

John
