SOLD: FS: Onkyo 9070 Integrated Amp with DAC

Recommended Posts

Item:  One Onkyo 9070 Integrated Amp with only 300 hours on the clock.
Location:  Bowen Nth Qld
Price:  $950 including postage to the eastern states
Item Condition:  As new with manual, remote and original packaging.
Reason for selling:  Really didn't like the sound of this series of Onkyo amps, far too soft for my liking.
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD, Direct Deposit.
Extra Info:  Originally bought to use as a bit of a round robin amp to send around so that people can get a comparative idea of how things sound I was hoping that the new Onkyo series could be used as a foundation reference point for my integrated amp comparisons but there is no point in using an amp that I don't like the sound of as a reference point (well, OK, maybe there is, but it wouldn't be much fun, so it's up for sale).  Would work brilliantly on bright or forward speakers since it is a very withdrawn and soft sounding amp.  It is sort of an anti-Rotel.

I understand this unit to be essentially the same as 9000R as far as the amp section goes. Extremely well-received in the Asian regions.

Glad to see that you rate the Redgum. GLWTS.

The 9000R has larger filter caps, I'm sure there were one or two other differences as well but I thought they were pretty minor when I ordered the 9070.

Have this series of Onkyos sold well in Asia?  I can't say I've heard anything about their degree of sales success.

Man the 9000R sold like hot cakes at least in South Korea. I'm sure their sales record in Japan was pretty much similar. Many discussed how good the 9070 was compared to the 9000R. The consensus appears to be that they were pretty similar as far as the amp section goes.

Maybe. This article discusses what made the 9000R AND 9070 so popular in Korea by stating right from the outset 'The current status is that one can't sell Onkyo 9000R and 9070 just because they ran out of the supply to meet the demand': http://fullrange.kr/ytboard/view.php?id=matching&page=1&sn1=&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&sz=off&keyword=12&no=59&PHPSESSID=5c496270d2d4de04a051cfc10326d9da#.U45U3fm1ZVU

These guys seem to love the 9070 as well;

I know I shouldn't argue with them, because that would be pretty much the opposite of marketing and all, but..., I'm having a very hard time staying quiet about my disagreement with some of their test scores.

Maybe I should get someone else to write up my FS posts, I think I'm too close to this for my own good.

Thanks for the effort mate, but I'm a bit of a tragic when it comes to saying things I don't feel.  I'm really not good at talking something up when I don't like it personally.

It's holding me back job wise was well, I break out in a rash every time someone says the word "sales".

I had some issues with a company I used to work for, no names mentioned of course, when my boss told me that we now used LMI pumps across the board because he had got us a regional distribution deal with LMI.  Alright I said, but what if the customer wants to replace what they had with the same brand (we had formerly used Iwaki, and some of the sites I worked on used Prominent pumps.  He said to talk up LMI because that is how you 'build a brand'.

Now there's nothing wrong with LMI pumps, they work just fine, but I found out (the hard way) that they were just that bit harder to set up properly, they came with imperial fittings as standard, so you had to order metric fittings separately and then throw away the standard fittings as junk if you were already tubed up with metric hose.  The fittings leaked, not badly but IMO more often than either Prominent or Iwaki fittings and some of the "optional extra" fittings just didn't seem to have the life span of either the Iwaki or the Prominent equivalents.  So what did I do?  I did whatever the customer wanted and whatever made the job easier for me, I generally did service work so I didn't have to quote on new installations very often and when I did I would quote the LMI pumps.  But I wouldn't push them, because I didn't believe they were the best gear for the job, and I would always ask if the customer had a preference.  Oh, and one other thing, I could order an Iwaki or Prominent pump and have it in my hands within a week, but we had to wait 2 to 3 weeks to get an LMI pump because we ordered them direct from LMI US.

I now hear that the company I used to work for has returned to using Iwaki as their standard pump supplier so I feel confident I was doing, if not the right thing then at least the sensible thing.

None of that had anything to do with my current unemployment status by the way.

And none of that is going to help me sell this Onkyo.  Still it took me almost 12 months to sell the Xindak A-08 and then it only went because I'd found out that it matched up really well with Usher S520s, maybe I need to find a redeeming feature of the 9070, something I can honestly say it does quite well.  I'll have to experiment and see what I can find.

The ultimate mood setting amp for the bedroom setup. When one just wants to chill to some jazz or lounge music, this non fatiguing amp matches best to speakers that excel in revealing all of the details in the music being played..

Now there is a good point.  As an amp for make out music it would excel.  That's a good selling point if ever there was one.

Thanks very much for the assist guys, I needed it on this one.

One can always rely on you Geoff for an honest and educated opinion on amplifiers - in the words of Australian Idols top judge Marcia Hines 'be true to yourself'

My cursory take on the Onkyo after a short listen doesn't offer any real insight however here it is

I'd have to agree with Geoff that the amp would shape up with the right speaker but what that is I am not sure. Don't forget the onboard DAC and phono stage/
