Torture porn isn't my cup of tea either. However as movie critics, I think Margaret and David should have stepped up and reviewed it, particularly as it is homegrown.

I did see the first film and thought Jarratt's character was well done.

For people of their stature in the industry they need to toughen up if all the reasons was that they were 'scared'/repulsed by the first one and figured the second would be more of the same. How could they not review a movie that was a chance at (and indeed was) No 1 in box office sales in its opening weekend? The excuse 'I don't like the subject matter' shouldn't count if they consider themselves professional.

For the record, I have not seen it yet, saw the first one and thought it was a decent movie. Jarratt was scarily excellent in his role.

Reading about this film in the Age today & the many comments from readers saying the film is this, & the film is that,

& it made me wonder to myself "how many of these people who espouse their negative spiel about this film have actually seen it?"

I speculate it is "none of them."

Censorship is still censorship, even when applied by gentle folk.

It's not censorship to decide not to review a film.

There are an awful lot of films coming out every week, and they have to chose which films to review.

I would rather that they focus on films which interest them.

Pffftt.......who takes any notice of critics anyway ?

You can tell a lot from watching Margaret and David. I find that their judgment is particularly good. And I can tell, based upon what they say and the clips they show, whether it is likely that I would enjoy a film.

To me, that just indicates your tastes are similar to theirs.

Mine, or the next blokes, may or may not be.

No different to food critics

That's true. Though I am not as enamoured of style as Pomeranz, and I don't share their love of 40s and 50s classics.

The point is, though, a good critic is consistent, and tells you enough about what they are reviewing to allow you to correct for their biases and work out whether it is likely you would like it.

They are good reviewers.

Agreed.

This is pretty much what I do on the very seldom occasions I take notice of a critical review.

Wolf Creek 1 or 2 (yes, I have seen 1) is not the type of movie subject I would actively seek out.

If it were available to watch at a time when I felt like it, then I would watch it.

I saw the first movie. One thing that stood out for me were the inconsistencies in the shooting locations. One moment they were crossing the bridge in Port Augusta, then they jumped to the Pichi Richi Pass, then somewhere else in the Flinders Ranges, although it was supposed to be in Western Australia.

I've heard reports that they've toned down the shock/horror/violence in the new movie.

Spotted the Pt Augusta bridge straight up.

God knows how many time I have driven through the Pichi Richi pass. Probably several hundred.

The amount of people who s[otted that would be limited IMO.

I am sure the same would be true of many, many other movies if one were familiar with the filmed area enough.

Yes, and the thing is, you can't possibly see more than a fraction of the films that come out,

Reviewers can highlight new directors, and exceptional films, etc, which you might not otherwise see.

curiously looking on rotten tomatoes (which pulls together available viewer and reviewer reviews) theres not too many. but looks like David has infact reviewed it for the australian

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wolf_creek_2/

"Mclean injects the grimmest of grim humour into the mix (including a bizarre reference to the Rolf Harris classic Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport), and I imagine Quentin Tarantino is one of the movie's biggest fans. But the end result is manipulative and ugly."

dont subscribe to the australian so not a review can read, but he gives it a rotten tomato overall. and overall tomatometer is "undecided"

perhaps its actually margaret that cant bare to watch it. which can understand, she reminds me of my poor departed mum and if she were alive I couldnt expect her to subject herself to kind of film this appears to be ? not that have watched it or the original to really say.

I can deal with R+ rated with all the blood gore and the rest of it, but Wolf Creek was very hard to watch because of its real settings without much special effects. I did start a thread on movies that were hard to sit through. I can sit through exercist, Holloween,666 and those Saw franchise, but what did me was the movie "A killer inside me", I was unable to sit through the scene where Jesica Alba gets beaten up and another scene where he beats a women senseless on the floor! Watching these scenes renders me useless because I felt like going into the screen defending those defenceless women even if it was just all make believe.

Then they shouldn't anything at all IMO.

They don't tell half stories for all the other films they don't critique.

  • 2 weeks later...

I actually went and saw it and enjoyed it !

I  thought the first one was more intense and darker.

The scene where there is a herd? of Kangaroos crossing the road is bloody hilarious, " sorry Skippy "  was Mick's muttered comment!  classic !! ;)

This is not my normal genre of film but my partner wanted to watch it and it was better than I thought it might be!

Probably the part John played as the mad outback killer Mick was so well done by him that it carried the film!  imho. :)

Guest Peter the Greek

I finally got around to watching this on the weekend. Its completely different to the first one which scared the pants off me (which I think is a good thing, I mean why create more of the same?).

This was just plain violence and "humour" - not to everyone's taste but I didn't mind it, some pretty funny bits i.e. truck down the hill and the bit with the roos

My wife was horrified by the original. So much so she wouldn't allow our kids or anyone else for that matter watch it, that was until at 17 my daughter decided she new better and watched it for her herself. She to was horrified and in unison they have scorned the new movie. Needless to say it won't be showing on my TV anytime soon.

I saw the original, was pretty rough but I didn't think as bad as the women of the home made out. Might have to sneak a copy home one night when its out on blu ray and watch when the girls aren't home, I reckon the wife would put the movie through the garbage disposal if she found it.

As far as the movie critics are concerned, each to their own IMO.
