it is near the end of the month...have you gone over your download limit perhaps and dropped back to dial speeds?

I guess that's not too bad considering we live on a "farm" and we're >3km from the nearest town (Hahndorf). At least it's very consistent.

One tip FWIW is that our speed dropped to about 1 MBPS when we moved into the new house. This was the same wherever we tried it, even in the "big shed" where the Telstra line is first accessible within the property.

Telstra did lots of testing of the line and at the exchange and Internode tried to get me to try another modem. Anyway, after 3-4 weeks I twigged that the culprit was an unfiltered phone connection to the Fox IQ.

The reason it took so long was because, when I disconnected the Foxbox, the modem did not resume the 7 MBPS speed until after it had been rebooted.

Maybe this info will help someone else get the best speed out of their connection....

Cheers
Tony

The problem with ADSL2 and ADSL2+ connections is that in general you don't benefit from these technologies as you get further away from the exchange or multiplexer.
Quite often I hear from people that they paid for an ADSL2+ service but it runs no faster than their original ASDL1 service did. How is this so?

ADSL2+ uses downstream frequencies as high as 2.2MHz, whereas ADSL1 only goes to 1.1MHz. Also in ADSL1 mode, there is effectively more relative spectrum bandwidth in which to acheive a 1.5Mbits/s line speed. Any part of the band that experiences interference can be rejected by the modem in favour of other parts (known as bins) not or less affected by interference and noise.

As the concentration of ADSL services on street cable increases, so does the potential for cross pair interference caused by less than perfect cable and transmission level differences (attenuation).
It's a complex discussion topic, too lengthy for a detailed reply here. Just accept the fact that more is not always better.

Cheers,
Alan R.
