27 CDs for US$99 - add about $20 to get it here. The box is home to a set of CD books with detailed notes, images and words, finely produced. Full contents at Arkiv.

Hard to tell if such a price for such a collection is a sign of hope or otherwise, but these are what I'll be listening to until further notice.

Faure Requiem Conducted by Phillippe Herreweghe. I have several versions on vinyl but this is my favourite. Often hear excerpt used in documentaries. Doesn't come across as a typical requiem. More cheery and uplifting.

It is the Lullaby of Death.

If you want theatre, try the Verdi.

Why, pray tell, should a Requiem be theatrical let alone hysterical like Mr Verdi's sacred opera?

Just about my most loved recording of anything ever. I can even forgive Sviatoslav's shocking combover.

Found an early English pressing for cheap on Friday. Magic!!

Hi

Picked up Menuhin Conducts Mozart yesterday in a sale. (I tried to post a pic, but couldn't make it work).

It's a 5 CD set which has had excellent reviews. So far I've only had a chance to listen to the flute/ harp concerto in a sequential comparison with Marriner/St Martin in the Fields version. Both the harp and flute are recorded very much more to the fore in the Menuhin recordings and the ensemble playing seems a tad more sprightly/dynamic. Next up will be a comparison of the 38-41st Symphonies with the Mackerras/Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Should be an interesting comparison because the the latter is on SACD,

Cheers
Mick

Have never been a big fan of Bach, but have found solace listening to Goldberg Variations and art of fugue when Im putting in the hours.

So I picked up this box to explore a little more, thinking it was a safe bet...the others I have in the series- Rubinstein/Chopin, Reiner/Strauss have been great (that said I only really listen to CDs at my desk through headphones)

but this one sucks. Truly sucks. they clearly just tried to capitalize on the fact that its gould playing bach. Halfway through pieces it will change to a completely different recording from a different year. drives me nuts. Im glad it was only 20 bucks or whatever.

A single work, though in 12 sections, running at a shade under 6 hours. I haven't quite got my head around its overall shape yet ...

Hi
We went along to hear Beethoven's Violin Concerto played by Isabelle Faust w the TSO/Marko Letonja the other night.

You realise she's already recorded the Beethoven?

http://www.guardian....do-faust-review

Yes she's apparently recorded it twice. I was going to pick up one or other of those,as they both have had excellent reviews.

Faust's recording of Beethoven and Berg violin concertos has just won this year's Gramophone Awards in the Concerto category.

I dont have many of her recordings, but I do have her playing the Brahms horn trio and a brahms sonata.

This is probably my favourite recording of the horn trio, they all use period instruments including a natural horn and guts strings. Tonally, this seems to work much better than other recordings I have heard which seem edgy and dont always mesh well.

Thanks for the reminder, I'm listening to it as I write. :) I can't make comparisons with other recordings, but the playing on this one is certainly warm and cohesive -fills my room beautifully.

Well, coming off that horn trio I turned to this recent release by the Nash ensemble. I love the adagio and allegro op 70 played with french horn on it. This is a great release.

Then after that, wanted to listen to the cello version so played through this...another amazing release.

if you like schumann, you simply must buy these.

By the way- did anybody make it to the MSO with Hough a couple of weeks back?

Couple of things:
Oxana Shevchenko: Winner of the 2010 Scottish International Piano Competition. Delphian Records. Seems that any self-respecting Eastern European girl is either a tennis player or a pianist these days. She is very good: strong without bashing, and can make it sing, too. The recording has quite adequate dynamics, and some atmosphere from the Guinness Room of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, Glasgow. (Not so much as to smear the playing) The programme is a canny mix of Ravel (Miroirs, La Valse), Mozart (hisself, and as transcribed by Liszt & Busoni), Shostakovich (a few preludes and that), and Thea Musgrave. Reminds me more than a little of Martha Argerich's 1965 EMI album, for its confidence and joie de vivre - and you know how good THAT album is. Highly recommend it.

Alexandre Tharaud: Le Boeuf Sur Le Toit. Virgin Clasics. A tribute album to the night club of the same name. All short works, with various guests. Light weight programme material, based essentially around the works of Clément Doucet and Jean Wiener, who established themselves at the venue. Undemanding material, and good fun.

I'll stick pix on when I get to a proper computer

Strictly I'm not listening to it, but after tonight's Steven Osborne recital in Melbourne, it'll go on order.

Melbourne shamefully left about a third of the Recital Centre seats vacant. If he's coming your way, go!

Highlight of the evening (for me) was the George Crumb 'Processional'.

Yes, heard about the weather there. Keep out of it.

I may look that disk up. I really need to get some more Pentatones - Channel Classics need some competition.

Channel Classics recordings are excellent indeed, though sometimes close-miked, too close actually, at least in the recordings I have (Vivaldi's Podger for example).
Bach's Magnificat by the Netherlands Bach Society is pretty good on the other hand.
Pentatone's recording are a bit more laid back, maybe less detailed but more natural and relaxing. Schubert's violin sonatas with Julia Fischer is another good recording.
Harmonia Mundi's are usually good as well, except for some HIP orchestras which are too bright.

I will stay out of amplifier sound discussions except to make this perpetual reminder: all amps sound different, but the differences are unique to you. Whatever anyone else has to say about the sound of an amp is of no use to you, except it may bias your listening impressions, either for or against it.

A vanished sound - very forward voices (in mono) with an orchestra in the next studio. But the presence of the singers is startlingly vivid still.
