Bach- Actus Tragicus (German Harmonia Mundi, 1968) with a Telemann on the reverse side. An old favorite purchased at a record store in London along with The Slits debut release. I think this may be available on disc from French Harmonia Mundi. Just as beautiful today as when I first heard it a long time ago;

Ralph Vaughan Williams- Sym no.6 and The Lark Ascending (Angel Records, 1967) with Boult conducting The New Phil. This, too.

Bach- Actus Tragicus

You mean BWV 106? I have the Suzuki - must re-listen to it then.

Who is the violinist in the Boult Lark? Would it be Hugh Bean?

That it is, Cat. Seeing how we're discussing very nice albums, here's one from your neck of the woods, or, waters, I should say. From the KOCH International label- Ernest Bloch's Evocations/Two Last Poems . . Maybe/Trois Poemes Juifs- James Sedares conducting the New Zealand Symphomy Orchestra (1994). Very moving it is. Cheers.

Arrived today.

Beautiful music and dynamic recording too (using the redbook layer). Don't have a SACD player to put it in, can only think that it would be nicer still. Any other fans of these Delibes' works out there?

Sylvia: Ballet Suite, Lakm'e (Excerpts), Le Roi S'Amuse, Coppelia (Excerpts).

Hi

Listened to some flutes today:

1. Flotenkonzerte aus SansSouci with Patrick Gallois and Kammerorchestra C.P.E. Bach (DG) and

2. J-P Rampal -J.S. Bach - 3 flute concertos (CBS).

Nicely differing (in my perception at least) of the assertiveness of the master, and the sprightliness of the aspirant, but both well worth the listen.

Cheers

G'day,

Heifetz - Double Concertos -- I'm always a sucker for any of the Bach violin concertos (although this BWV 1043 is a bit more allegro than that to which I am accustomed), so this hybrid SACD was a no-brainer.

G'day,

Spinning some cheep CDs/SACDs wot I got from Barnes & Noble recently:

Posted ImagePosted Image

Nikolaus Harnoncourt - Mozart: Requiem -- this is a hybrid SACD but I'm playing the CD layer. A different sound with period instruments.
Glenn Gould - Goldberg Variations -- this is the 1955 version. Much faster than the 1982 version that I also have.

I got a couple of BIS CDs of music by Brett Dean the other day. Very impressive. I can understand why he's shot so spectacularly to 'No.1 Australian composer' status. I particularly liked his pieces 'Carlos' and 'Water Music'.

I'm interested to find out what other australian music people own/enjoy

Suzuki's cycle of JS Bach's cantatas on BIS, downloaded from eclassical as 24 bit flac files, sound very good (at least the two I've purchased so far; vol 33 & 34). Sometime ago I was tempted to buy the CD box sets of these but now there are good downloadable versions available, I'm glad I didn't. :P

I heard the Spring Sonata (or at least the first movement) last night at a friend's place.
Absolutely superb and very fine recordings. What a pity about the daft packaging. ("Rubik's Cube", as my friend called it.)

My MDT shipment arrived yesterday. Played the Faust and Melnikov Spring Sonata right away, and you are right, great recording. Melnikov's piano playing is really a thing of beauty.

Playing this evening is Shostakovich symphony no. 5. This came in at number 31 on the ABC Classics 100 20th Century chart. The highest placing for Shostakovich.

Spin Clean'ed and lightly applied a little LAST solution to some favorites and listened back to back . .

Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice performed by Sigiswald Kuijken and Le Petite Band on period instruments with the Collegium Choral and Rene Jacobs, etc (Accent). You are there acoustics. In the top echelon of recordings that I have heard in this regard. The singing is beautifully captured, too;

Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci performed by The Choir and Orchestra La Scala on location conducted by von Karajan and featuring Joan Carlyle, Carlo Bergonzi and others (DG). Ditto.

Bizet's Sym no.1 in C and Tchaikovsky's Francesca da Rimini performed by the Royal Philarmonic conducted by Charles Munch (Chesky). Closer perspective and a powerful performance.

From the same MDT shipment, Faust and Melnikov playing Schubert Sonate D574, Rondo op.70 and Fantasie D934. These are not as well known as Schubert's major works, and heard them for the first time, but I found them engaging straightaway. Really enjoying Faust and Melnikov's partnership.

Picked up this ABC Classics release the other day on trip into town (and it's proved to be a good antidote to the whole 'town experience') :

Posted Image
Mad Rush, Solo Piano of Phillip Glass, played by Sally Whitwell.

Nice use of the clean, clear, sustained tones of a Stuart & Sons piano.

I have this CD...but I dont particularly like it.

My favourite recording of the 5th is Karl Ancerl's on the Supraphon label. Similar to Bernstein's i suppose, though a little faster and a lot more energy but without any 'imperial march' feel to it.

Picked up the Decca Sound 50cd box in the boxing day sales as well...had a few vouchers lying around, so that on top of discounts left me only $80 out of pocket, so bargain

I haven't heard Ancerl's ... will look it up.
So far, then one I like the most is Rostropovich with the National Orchestra on DG
The same low cost DG album also featured the 2nd Cello concerto (with Ozawa/Boston Symph) which is superb.

I am quite enamored of Jean-Efflam Bavouzet myself. After a glowing review in BBC Music Magazine I picked up one of his volumes of Debussy's piano works... wanting a contemporary alternative to the classic Walter Gieseking recordings.

Downloaded this album yesterday morning in DSDIFF;

Emily Palen: (Violin)
Glass: Live at Grace Cathedral (Cookie Marenco Blue Coast Records)

At a good volume it did indeed sound like Emily was right here in my room playing live or more correctly put, I was there in the Cathedral.

Schubert String Quintet in C Major - Pablo Casals (LP: Turnaround)
It's two years today since my dad died. So I'm drinking some of his favourite wine (Morris Durif 2001; now into a 1997, so getting a bit sloppy) and listening to some of his favourite music. He loved a lot of music but Schubert above all and, along with the 9th Symphony, this piece in particular. We played the Adagio at his funeral. He made two annotations on the back cover: 'Slow movement influenced by Beethoven 4?' (I haven't pursued this). And a quote from my mum, soon after they met: 'What was the tender music?' It is beautiful music.

Nice one Monty. Great piece of music. I've not heard the version with Casals. I should try to track that down.

Celebrating the sunshine here, after a week of rain, with some Vivaldi concerti rustica. I heard a concerto on classic fm this morning played by the English Concert and Trevor Pinnock and so tracked down the flac 44.1/16 download from universal music - perfect.

BTW, for those who like Suzuki's cycle of the Bach cantatas, vol. 2 is available today as a 1/2 price flac download (about $4.40AU) from eclassical. These early ones are 16 bit but it pays to keep an eye out for later 24 bit volumes come up on the daily deal from time to time too.

Me too. His earlier recordings on MDG of all of Ravel and an interesting Liszt selection are superb. From the little I've found, he doesn't seem to enjoy a great reputation as a live performer, but he cuts a great record.

He and Alexander Melnikov would be my pick of the players going around at present - I wouldn't hesitate to get anything they commit to disc.

I have been collecting the Tinter Bruckner cycle and generally they have been revelatory.

Today this arrived:

Posted Image

Now I've only listened to it at work on a Walkman disc player but I can say this is easily the greatest, most satisfying recording of the Sixth I have ever heard. Utterly, totally majestic.

All Bruckner lovers should have this in their collection. This is not an option.
