Hi. I'm setting up either a 2.0 or 3.1 channel system with some Sonique SAV3's and a Sonique SAVC1 (maybe) and aren't sure which way to go yet. It's primarily for music but tv and movies will also be in the plan. I already have a NAD 216 THX power amp and was thinking of pairing it up with an Audiolab 2000Q but am not sure what kind of sound Audiolab has. I needed something a little warmer than my CA gear as it was just too bright with those speakers. The other way I was thinking of going was to get a NAD T748. What do you think? Am I going to get better sound out of the Audiolab or the NAD?

Blake.

If the CA gear was too bright with your system then the Audiolab won't be much different in that aspect.

You could describe the sound as clean, dry and somewhat cold.
This is not to say it is necessarily bad, it just means it is best used with systems that have a warmish tonal character and with copper speaker cables.

Probably better off sticking with NAD gear then.

Audiolab built in the uk = 1980's and up to 1997 analog sounding
Audiolab after: not anything special ( had the 8000m monos.audio d-dac.8000cd.8000q.
Stick with the older audiolab gear.

Actually the Westlake designed 8200CD CDQ and MDAC are pretty good.

Not the 8200 preamp or power amps.

I used to have an Audiolab 8000a integrated. UK made in the 90s. Great sound for the cash with a decent phono stage. I compared it to an Arcam 9 amp. Beat it hands down. However avoid bright(ish) speakers. Don't expect warm & cuddly either. I think the modern stuff will probably have a very similar character.

If you can, listen before you buy.

Might be a similar reaction to djb's "Am I being persecuted?" thread.

I hope that your amp turns up soon.

Blake,

Somebody on this forum has an Audiolab 8000Q on offer for $500.

Rantan has described the Audiolab 'sonic signature' pretty accurately.

You will either love it, or find it too clinical.

By the way, what is the 2000Q?

Have 8200CDQ as source for bright-ish speakers (MA GS-60), although the latter are also nicely complemented by a pair of Holton Precision HPA LSP400se amp modules which may be helping counter what has been described as prominent mids from GS60s. I'm perhaps a bit of cynic when it comes to 'amp sound' but the following review my amp appears to be just what the 8200CDQ & MA GS60 need;

The overall character is warm, but the tonal balance is still neutral enough. The amp sounds relaxed and in complete control. Bass is excellent, although not as tight as the Creek Destiny which was also present at the time. The amp still sounded solid enough, though, and actually had a very pleasant overall sound.
The top end is sweet and ever so slightly soft, erring more on the side of musicality than analyses. The mid range lacks a little bit of resolution, with fine detail being smoothed over slightly, but also has a pleasant hint of richness. The sound stage is deep, big and with good focus, but everything is well behind the speakers. This amp cannot be called forward by any measure and produces a natural sounding mid to back hall perspective. Rhythm and pace were good, with the mid to lower parts of the spectrum providing most of the propulsion.

That's no good mate. I'm about to pull the trigger on another sna amp myself. I hope I don't have similar issues.

Maybe folks are encouraging you to provide a description when yours does arrive? That's my guess re the likes
