The "NEW" Hamer Hall - worth the time & money :)

I've been fortunate enough to sit in on a MSO rehearsal @ the refurbished Hamer Hall this week.
IF you're in Melbourne DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR and book a seat for a convert, particularly if you have not been there in years. The difference is gobsmaking.
It's less congested and more immediate - with much more of the energy projected at the audience. Complex passages are presented with greater articulation, esp. during a large orchestral piece. There is less discernible difference in reflections if you don't get a seat in the more desirable balcony or central floor area.
Similar sonic signature to the Recital Centre, but with better overall dispersion IMO.

There is a nice vid clip here: http://www.abc.net.a...440?section=vic
The clip explains a little of what they did and how they believe the acoustics have improved as a result.
I haven't been there for some years, and have got quite used to the alternative Melbourne Town Hall venue, so Davidsss can report to us all his observations!

I see the Count Basie Orchestra is playing there in October, also a screening of West Side Story with the MSO playing the score... might have to go to that (wonderful music!) I'm less attracted by the Classical concerts scheduled to date...

Funnily enough not a huge amount was done in the auditorium. New acoustic reflectors and new stage layout with surrounds, perhaps the upgrading of the monitors etc helps more than anything.
That being said I went to the opening night and enjoyed a few tunes, the free beer helped, ............ a lot.
Anyway all the smoke detection and evacuation system was installed by me and the moe. So do notice how professionally it was done.
dirty.
