Oops. Golden rule. Always delete any messages with attachments from unknown sources. If from a known source and unusual, email and check if they sent it before opening.

I'm feeling a bit left out. :(

Could that be because my only internet address is with Internode?

My wife saw a message from my aunt with "private message" and being pretty lax with security issues, she opened it on her laptop.

I'm not sure what damage this might have done but as always these shysters are always ten jumps ahead of Nortons.......

because their viruses work which is more than i can say for norton products :D

invoices should not come as *.exe files or zip files or rar....invoices should only ever come as pdf's and if your pdf reader is patches to the latest version you should be safe. Mind you, it is possible to back door pdf's as well but we only see this type of thing in APT based attacks.

Beware of the DHL or FedEx ones............nasty!

USPS and UPS as well, they are generally mass mailed vectors with exe attachments, very easy to filter or spot.

If anyone is looking for good anti virus protection, i recommend kasperky

We got hit with some trojans late last year - cleaned out 2 credit cards and a savings account. I did a LOT of research back then, as a result we now use this anti malware package. Its really solid, and you can see it picking up suspect links and blocking them while surfing the web. I highly reccomend it, and it works well in tandem with a good antivirus package. Be very careful out there !!

Yeah apologies I'll fix the link - it is a highly trusted anti malware program, and from experience it is a minefield when looking for ones that are'nt actual malware themselves. - trust me - this is not dodgy at all.

Little Snitch on the Mac is a firewall that prevents unauthorised **outgoing** messages.
It works well for me.

Does it stop those pesky people calling from Punjab trying to sell me a new phone plan?

I think that must be the case. I use Gmail and so do many people I know and none have had any problems at all.

These guys drive me nuts! Almost every evening around dinner time they'll call to tell me they can improve my home phone plan with free local calls. I tell them I already have that and politely say "goodbye" and I can still hear them trying the next sales pitch when I'm hanging up. We actually get more calls from marketeers (the polite expression) on the home phone than people we know and are seriously thinking about just disconnecting the land line.

I just have the land-line phone ringer on silent. It means the phone is there if needed for outgoing calls but I never actually answer it. I think phone free plans are the same cost as a phone with ADSL? Might as well just keep the home phone for emergencies.

Just buy a small answering machine and leave it on all the time.
The tele-marketers must have sensors that automatically disconnect when there is a machine on the line.
When you hear a real voice, then you can answer.
