Hi All, so ive had great success in modifying the crossover network with a friends assistance on the mid range and tweeter. Ive swapped over the resistor to a non inductive mills unit and the caps over to VCaps Oil. The sound quality improvement, detail, space, air has changed for the better dramatically.
Now im looking at the bass, the crossover network uses a series of ferrite cores for the inductors. My friend has suggested some larger air foil cores... Can anyone comment on the potential replacement of these and moving them to a seperate crossover board? The current ferrite core is jammed onto the board. The other option was the use of a low dcr North Creek music systems wirewound inductor..
Looking for an improvement in the muddy, sloppy bass
Thanks
Crossover mods, Focal 927 BE

Speakerbug.com.au stocks Jantzen inductors that would do the trick nicely. I used these in my ProAc 1S clones.

North creek supplied this, cause they believed i needed to replace all the ferrite cores
L6 is 4mH, 12 AWG, $144.20 each;
L3 is 1.5mH 12 AWG 79.54 each
L5 is 0.5mH 12 AWG is $40.90
Thats North Creeks pricing, as you can see, its stupidly expensive given I need 2 of each! So, ideally just L6 which needs a DCR of 0.390 or less. I think getting L6 off the board is the best idea to start with

FWIW I'm not a fan of putting any inductors in series with a bass driver.
And I'm sure you know already that the only problem ferrite cored inductors have is that they saturate at high power levels causing distortion but unless Focal have really screwed up that's not going to be happening.
Changing to an air cored inductor is unlikely to help with "muddy, sloppy bass" .
An inductor of any type with much much lower DCR may tighten the bass up a tad but you'd assume that Focal knew what they were doing and the system was designed to perform correctly with the current coil DCR.

KenTripp, yep. I guess i was looking for guidance, doesnt appear financially feasible to do this mod. I think ill just compliment the system with a REL sub bass system.... The mid/tweeter is really really lush now, it just needs more bottom end.
