Well my good mate Kevin (Tri-K) and I have decided to host a joint GTG on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday 29th July, kicking off from about 10.00a.m.

It will be held at Kevin's wonderful house at Kuluin complete with 2 listening environments including his incredible sound lounge that would be the envy of many a retailer, except for the boys from Wow Sight & Sound who can't make it apparently.. To say his equipment would blow you away would be an understatement. It is simply incredible and makes even mediocre music sound brilliant, with the exception of anything by Justine's Beaver which would still sound like shite. I will bring along my own brand of sonic excellence and blow you away with my new crystal set and Edison Roll that sits proudly in my studio..... purely to put Kevvy's gear to shame mind you....

Apparently Kevin has hosted similar events before for the Brisbane Audio Club and had as many as 15-20 on previous visits. We hope to have a goodly turnout for this day as we have even booked a sunny day with the powers that be. A hot meal (not porridge) will be made available but you're also invited to bring along something by way of a contribution if you feel so inclined. I might even exercise my own culinary skills and cook up some tasty smoked haddock profiteroles with a coulis of brothel sprouts for those with adventurous taste buds. If you wish to imbibe with your beverage of choice, bring that along but you'll need your own power supply and refrigeration facilities if you bring a keg.

Yours truly will attempt to bombard any willing victims to a bevy of tunes from within the progressive / rock / symphonic / new age / jazz fusion / Celtic rock / folk and world genres although naturally, you're all welcome to bring along whatever floats your boat. (Any rap music with excessive profanities or death metal growls will be confiscated and sold on E-bay or used as drink coasters ;) ) You'll have the chance to hear music from as many as 6,000 different titles so there's a good chance you will lose your aural virginity many times on the same day. Wouldn't that be a multiple orgasm of the ears?

This is a great chance to hear some excellent music on some wonderful gear so do yourselves a favour and make the trip up to the sunny coast for the day. Anyone coming up from Brisbane could probably car pool so I'm sure something could be arranged if enough notice was given. We'd both really love to see you all there.

PM either myself or Kevin (Tri-K) for further details.

Thanks for listening...

Greg

Colour me interested! It's a pretty big hike for me to come along but I'm certainly keen! Something about the 29th is tickling my brain though... Hopefully it's nothing important :)

It'd be a big drive for me and I hate the tollways on the way from here but I'm in Singapore on that date...dammit, been a while since I've been to the Sunshine Coast and all it's attendant delights too. Bummer.

"attenuate the self-generated reflections" - "to absorb and dissipate"...sounds like a mirror to me and why put one of those on top of a speaker?

Kevin,

Thanks so very much for the personal invitation today.

It will be my pleasure to attend, yet again.

Infact, I will encourage my wife to join me as it will be an enjoyable drive to your place and I could use the company.

If she doesn't like the 'music' she can go to the local shops and kill some time there.

See you and Greg on the 29th.

Warm Regards,

Russ.

Russ,

My wife, Jane, Kevin and Karen and I have done a bit of camping together and become good friends due to our musical tastes so it might be that the ladies could get together as well on the day. I'll put it to the powers that be.

Cheers,

Greg

I'd really like to come along too. As I live between Bundy and Gladstone (Agnes Water) it's a 5-6hr drive to the Sunshine Coast, not what I would call a day trip!

Given the 10am start, if I can find somewhere to bunk down the night before the GTG then I'd drive back afterwards.

Does any kind SNA soul who's going to the GTG have room in their broom cupboard? I can bring a sleeping bag...and a pretty decent bottle of red!

Thanks progladyte for suggesting it to me. I look forward to enjoying some of your progrock collection. ;o)

I live about 2 hours further 'South' from Kevin's place................

Won't make any sense offering you closet place in the circumstances.

I look forward to catching up with some of you, especially Millsy, who I haven't seen since the TT collection.

G'day,

As Krusty The Clown would say: "I heartily endorse this event or product".

Pencil me in for attendance on the day. I'm usually lurking on the fringes of Caloundra some weekends, so this GTG should be within my bailiwick. I'll root around the collection for some prog, but the choicest cuts are still en route from the U.S., unfortunately.

Er...... good point Russ...... just a bit of premature geriatric brain fade methinks.

Is there any possibility of anyone car pooling from Brisbane? I'm not sure if you know any of the others coming from down south but it makes sense if that can help defray fuel costs?

I've slotted you in for a DEFINITE Russ, so I'll look forward to seeing you on the day.

Cheers,

OK guys, we are up to 10 on the coming list with Comfortablynumb just confirming this morning.

We also have a traveller coming from the south side of Brisbane who may be able to pick someone up on the way if required. If you require transport, please let me know and we'll do our best to accomodate.

At this stage it looks like we have about half coming from Brisbane and the rest being local / further north.

This is gonna be bigger than Shane Warne's mobile phone bill guys so here's for a great day.

Millsy,

Even though I sent the message below through on one of the other threads yesterday about this GTG, I'll include it here as well.

* * * * *

OK guys,

We now have over 20 people attending this humungous event so we regrettably must now limit numbers to those who have already indicated their intention to come.

I'll send off whatever names and numbers I have to Kevin and he likewise so we can compare details.

I'll send off additional messages to everyone with address details shortly.

At this stage and with so many attending, it should be noted that we will not be able to accommodate requests to connect up other members gear if they chose to bring it along for auditioning. (Perhaps another time!)

It might also be reasonable to request some members bring along some horses doovers / deserts / cakes / drinks perhaps to help defray costs and prior preparation requirements for Kevin, his lovely wife Karen and myself. We will supply some initial sandwiches for around kick off time at 10.00a.m. as well as some hot meals for lunch. Can anyone offer something for other courses at this stage? (Please PM me)

It seems we have an overwhelming number of victims wanting to sample the smoked haddock profiteroles so I guess I'd better pull out the fishing line.......

Here's an updated list:

Cable Connoisseur – Russ
Millsy (Plus 1)
Fatgen – Andrew
Graeme B
Hired Goon – Geoff
Audiovalley – Ivan
Tri-K – Kevin / Karen / Lloyd / Troy
Prog – Greg
PfGblue – Peter
Listener – Steve
Greenie512 – Phil Greenwood
Anthony Carbone – SGR Audio
Jiri
Rod Straker
John Henry
Steve & Dianne
Comfortably numb

Still to finalise.

Wainy – TBA
Telecine – TBA
DHobba - Dave – Needs a lift from Brisbane.- Can anyone pick him up from Redland Bay please?

As we will be playing music samples from a very wide range of musical genre, USB sticks just might come in handy for those enquiring minds that wish to pursue such samples further. (All in the interests of spreading the word about excellent music, of course)!

See you on the day.

Greg

Also have a look at the other thread in the chill out section for an idea of some of the items on the playlist. Play some of the samples supplied to become familiar with some of the tracks.

Apart from hearing some seriously good gear, this GTG is also about discovery of different music genre that you may have overlooked or not heard much from before.

Kevin & Karen will be providing a hot lunch although at this stage I'm not exactly sure what that will be although I know it won't be a BBQ as they wish to have everything prepared well beforehand and to be just able to plate up quickly on the day.

As that was what I had in mind also for what I was proposing, my offering will be a curry with rice.

If you wanted to bring something along for starters, the skies the limit really.

Perhaps:

Bees and chickies
Chips
Meatballs
Something from the deli

Your better halves would probably know more than I do but think of whatever other people serve up when you attend one of their functions and I'm sure you'll score a win. It's not like we're trying to find Australia's next master chef.

As for deserts, perhaps something along the lines of:

Pavlova
Apple Pie / Crumble
Lemon Meringue Pie
Flan
Tart
Mud Cake

or whatever tickles your fantasy. I don't think people would be too fussed whatever you chose. It's more about having a good social day out and enjoying some music in a nice environment.

Hope that helps.

See you all there.

Many thanks to Kevin and his lovely wife, Karen and family for hosting such a great day.

I think we had about 20 all told which must be a pretty good number for the Sunshine Coast seeing we only have a few local members. I hope all the other Brisbane members and anyone else who had to travel a fair distance enjoyed themselves as much as I did.

Seeing this was my first GTG , I look forward to losing my virginity all over again real soon.

Cheers.

It was great to put faces (and personalities!) to online 'nicks'.

I am so glad I decided to drive 400km to be there. I can't say enough about Kevin, Karen and their wonderful kids for making me feel so welcome.

As I suspected, I left the GTG with a sense of how much further I have to go with my own system's development. I was shocked to hear details, especially in the low frequencies, in music I thought I already knew. I also realise how crucial room treatment can be to the overall listening experience. I am a man on a mission!!

I hope Russ is feeling better as an ear infection can be a miserable experience.

Greg (progladyte) kept us on our toes with a RockWizz-style quizz. Some pretty 'interesting' prizes were dished out. Haven't listen to mine YET!

I dropped into Ivan's place in Gympie on the way home and listened to his system too. No one will be stealing his speakers anytime soon. 9ft tall ribbons, push-pull bass units in transmission line config, weighing in at around 100kg each! And they sounded as good as they looked. That experience was the icing (and cherry) on the cake, before I finally headed home.

Thanks to all who made the GTG the VERY enjoyable experience it was.

Gentlemen, kindly refer to me as The Prog W H O R E if attending royal functions.

Otherwise, I'll answer to just "Prog" or "hey you"

As to the quiz, it was probably 'alf 'n' 'alf with prog taking up one 'alf and prog taking up the other 'alf.

More like about 75% / 25% as there were also some questions about The Beatles / Nick Drake etc.

I think next time, I'll bring along some real records to give away, not those Justine Beavers silk lined boxed sets of her greatest t i t s.
