Need some input here as my dad down the track is wanting to get something, but he is interested more towards mini hi fi system.

So like to know some recommendations. I think he will have a budget. Say $500 max give or take.

Look at second hand Denon or Yamaha systems.

Does it need to play CDs and am/fm radio?

Way too expensive I suspect.

Yes that looks like a reasonable option doesn't it?

What about a Creek Actimate. Saw one for $385 brand new. Add a used Marantz cd player or the like and you've got a crackn' little system. Might tip the scales at $500 though!

Another vote for the Denon minisystems. I've had the DM-31 previously and recently got the DM-38, after considering a few other options. It puts out a decent sound, bigger than its size would suggest, and also run the tv sound thru it in the living room. However unless you get a special price it will be probably be more like $650 - 700 new including the speakers (rrp is 799 for the non DAB version i think). Perhaps you could throw in the extra $ so your dad gets a new unit with a warranty for peace of mind. Anyway just a thought.

Cheers,

Ed

Edit: corrected to read "non DAB"

Sounds like he has the original boxes, so should be OK shipping I would imagine?

Maybe a little left field but the TDK boom box is fantastic. http://m.tdkperforma...pid=997&l=en-us

USB input for hard drives/ sticks & "I"product capable, fm/am radio, aux/instrument/mic input with fader for blending into the other inputs.......I get so many comments in how good it sounds at work ........ I'm really surprised by it.

I really doubt you'll get better sound for less than $500.

Just a thought :)

At first I thought limitation of around $500, but after talking to him recently, probably be able to double that. So that gives more headway. Looking at that Denon one mentioned.

Try keep options open, that Yamaha one I saw on Ebay seems a good deal, but awaiting response for postage costs etc, at the same time I have to find out what it would cost to use a courier, as that itself can be expensive as it gonna be one off.
