can use different software on your blue ray player appart from the manufacturer's?

I was just reading the info on the what blue ray software do you use -so can i get a different software to work in my blue ray player appart from the oem supplied in it??-I was also looking on the sony website and they were offering a software upgrade for my bdps500 player do these things make much difference or?

I think you'll find that thread is about PC/Mac software, not altenative software for a bluray player.

As far as player software updates are concerned (or firmware as it also commonly known), the manufacturer usually lists what extra features and/or bug fixes the update will offer, and it's up to you to decide if the update is of any benefit to you.
