Just out on Blu-ray, grabbed a copy and watched with my wife last night, was quite taken by it, below a short review I posted on another forum :)

The Iron Lady - Aus Release - 5.1 DTS Master Audio

Movie - 5/5 - This movie quite a surprise watch, the story of Margaret Thatcher, present day and reminiscing. Really just picked it up as know wife was keen to watch it. But before know it was just drawn in. Quite a story, some superb acting and the way the movie flows is excellent really. Quite intrigued by the movie and story, and quite a few points in the movie quite moved by. An insight into an incredible lady's life, and insight into humanity.

PQ - 4.5/5 - cant fault the picture quality, great photography, captures the time the moment, supports the movie as it should. done very well given so much of movie is filmed indoors.

AQ - 4.5/5 - all the detail and clarity is there as required of a movie of this type. you dont miss a word. And boy they have the odd moment that sneaks up on you. kaboom literally you are shaken by a moment and into realisation. As unbelievable as it might seem for a movie of this sort, surround effects are used extremely well, as is there some awesome LFE sub bass in sections as well !

Overall - 4.5/5 - I had no idea would be so touched by a movie such as this. I know it has been nominated and won a few awards and deservingly so I think. For me a great watch and one I enjoyed very much watching with my wife. A unique movie I think that can highly recommend.

Makka, she may well be and you don't have to watch it for any money but some members find your language offensive. Please edit your post to express yourself in a more sensitive way to avoid an infraction.

I have a friend who is English and lived in England during the 'Thatcher Years' and refuses to even comment on what he calls 'That fuc*en bit*h', who fuc*ed up England, and sees Australia going the same way as England mid 70's to early 90's ....

I noticed that the reviews were generally good and several seemed to go totally overboard re MS's acting prowess. Makes me wonder if I'm the only one underwhelmed by Ms Streep. The snippets I've seen of this movie seemed to venture uncomfortably close to caricature as opposed to great acting. Also, I'll be more inclined to agree with the assessments of her as a true great when she shows she can do a credible Aussie accent as opposed to her effort in "Evil Angels".

Still, I will watch this movie and try to keep an open mind - maybe her performance will convince me I've been totally wrong about this.
Cheers

I don't want to talk about Margaret Thatcher's principles or policies. This should not degenerate into a political slanging match. I will only say that I do not regard her as the "wicked witch" that her tenure as PM invoked amongst so many people.

I watched The Iron Lady this evening for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. I do regard Streep as a very, very fine actress indeed. This was not a caricature. It was an utterly flawless invocation of a very well known public figure.

I must admit that I've never seen Evil Angels, Tony. But may I assure you that while Meryl quite possibly can't get Strine right, she got Margaret's "accent" absolutely perfectly.

And if the possible descent into caricature bothers you, understandably as Meryl's recent flicks have all been portrayals of very famous people, may I suggest two earlier movies of hers.

One is "A Prairie Home Companion". She is nothing short of magnificent in this one and her "partership" with Lily Tomlin is superb. Great movie in its own right too with countless memorable performances.
The other is "The Bridges Of Madison County". Clint Eastwood said he only made one call when he was casting the female lead in this one. He made the right call.

Meryl didn't get strine right, instead she sounded exactly like Lindy Chamberlain!

Thanks, Brumby. On the basis of those comments, I'll make sure I see one or more of those movies. My opinions were based on very limited evidence and I'd be happy to rethink them if warranted.

But prof, although my memory of that movie might be a bit foggy now, I still doubt she sounded much like Lindy Chamberlain.

Tony I thought that Streep's Australian accent was just terrible until I heard Lindy Chamberlain speak and I was surprised at how much she sounded like Meryl Streep in Evil Angels!

Thinking about Meryl further, I'd like to see her paired with Jeff Bridges. I reckon that the sparks might resemble a minor nuclear explosion. In sheer acting ability, two of the finest (American or otherwise) alive today.

In the Iron Lady, you were looking at Meryl Streep but seeing Margaret Thatcher. It takes some (I hesitate to use the expression in this context but it's relevant) "balls" to pull that off.

Yeah, you could be right, Prof - I thought the accent was all wrong in the movie, but I can't recall listening to Lindy herself much.

Watched it last night. I enjoyed the scenes where Maggie was in her pomp & dozed through most of the portrayal of the Alzheimer's.

Perhaps you stopped taking the drugs and now your brain is working at full power.

I also have a lot of trouble watching most stuff these days and often end up fast forwarding through films.
Especially Hollywood films.
