Just a poll to find out how much time SNAers dedicate to listening to music on their systems?

Does one leave one's components switched on all the time or does one turn it on only when one is ready to use it?

Depends if you mean 'listening' or just having music on while doing other things too.

Analogue setup: 1986 Townshend Rock Mk2/AO rewired RB250/Soundsmith retipped VdH DDT-II special, Marshall Leech head amp, Copland CSA-14, Castle Howards.
PC System: i7 win8, T Amp, Monitor Audio Monitor One.
Digital System: Squeezebox Touch, DVD P181 as transport for CD, Audio gd NFB2.

Plus 4 additional TTs

No Sub-woofers were used in the reproduction of this sound

It can be both, doesn't have to be serious listening.

I will have my system on but I drift in and out of concentration wrt to listening.

I listen only when I am ready to sit down and pay attention. I have always been wary of letting the system percolate away as ''wall paper'. However, I will often stick on some classic jazz or American songbook type whilst cooking and enjoying a meal with friends, but this is a second system.

Currently, system is on 24 hrs a day, with me listening 4-6 hrs of those, as I'm doing some serious new equipment/cable burning-in! Volume at about -70dB overnight, a bit higher when out, and 'realistic' levels when sitting down listening.

I think you need another tab to check in the poll.................I checked more than 10 hours but I would easily listen more than 20 hours a week. My gear is on standby, but turn it on to listen.

I use my system for many hours every day, but much of that is streaming the TV/Foxtel audio through.

If I really think how many hours a week I listen to music in a stereo or multi-channel mode without TV, It is probably about an hour a day - miss a day or two, catch up an hour or so on the weekends.

Less than I first thought.

Then there is the 40 minutes a day listening to my flac files in the car.

way more than 10 hours per week on average.

Generally switch the gear on when I get home from work and switch them off at bedtime. Such are the obligations of running tube phono, pre amp and monoblocks. The musical enjoyment is well worth it.

It only gets switched off when the other half wants to watch one of her terrible TV shows. Which is too bloody often!!

I only use my system for music and concert DVDs. I seldom bother when I'm watching a movie and never when I'm merely watching TV.

I do very little casual listening. Serious listening sessions can easily last 3-4 hours - or more. There would be one pretty well every week and quite often two or three.

An average week would probably be 4-6 hours. A "music" week could easily be 20 hours. Hard to pick an average.

Serious listening about 1 to 2 hours a week.

Casual listening ~12 to 14 hours a day, but not Saturdays during the local footy season :)

When I'm home, I use my system almost every day without fail. I watch very little TV......... Too much shite on TV now .......Even the news gets a miss of late, as it's mostly all bad anyway IMO.

My kids are so much more settled & well behaved when the TV is off & the tunes are on. My Wife & I feel much more relaxed listening to music, when compared to watching TV.

Fri & Sat nights I'll have a few rums :hiccup with the wife & bang on a movie, after the kids have gone to bed.

I would average 20-30 hrs listening per week...... I would prefer my system to die of over-use, rather than just old age..... :D

I voted >20. System is on as soon as I am home and on until bed time, unless I feel like veging in front of the box. Separate room for the TV so I don't have to put up with some of the missus' shows! with a separate 2 channel system for movies. The weekend is another matter easily 8 hours a day it will be on. :)

Since putting together a pair of Kye's Straight 8's, mentioned here on SNA. And after tweaking the crossover to what sounds good to me, I've been doing at least 4 hours a day. They are just so God Damn easy to listen to. Ridiculously brilliant bang for buck. I've never been so keen to race home from work and listen. TV what TV?

My hours listed are just for music and most of that is at the weekend. Hours of use, though, tops 50-60 hours I would guess. In order to have as good a system as I have it must work for a living, so it does all the A-V duties as well. It isn't a chore, though; I love whatever sounds it puts out (although I can't stand The Amazing-Anybody-Watches-This-Race so usually go to read).

I sometimes get extra listening when I am converting LPs but that is patchy at the moment. That is also on the second system upstairs, but that is not a big bug-bear: it works well enough. ;-)

Thanks, Happy to help facilitate some more listening soon.

But, I don't know if your son also thinks it's quite as good though. He 'enjoys' a few hours in the house with a couple of 'old' blokes belting tunes out that where mostly released before he was born.
Probably not high on his list of cool things to do, listen to 'dad' music and stereo talk. Although he's pretty much unsupervised, so it couldn't be better for a teen? (or was that just me?)

I'd easily get 30hrs a week up, and thats from a shift worker who works 10hr shifts. Not all critical lstening, but generally always have music playing when at home. Tv is for the news and the odd footy game. Fortunately my wife loves music as much as I do.

An audiophile uses music to appreciate his hi fi, a music lover uses hi fi to appreciate his music. I am a music lover.

I switch the amp, phono & tt on as soon as I get up. CDP stays on 24/7. Only switch things off if I'm not going to be playing music for a couple of hours. Casual / critical ? Sometimes the music will just catch your ear & I'll sit in "the chair" to listen a bit closer. Late at night I'll sit down & close my eyes for some deep listening. Main rig is in a separate room from tv.

The missus & I watch the news & 7.30 & she's not interested in that commercial stuff, so we tend to watch the doco's & current affairs, a bit of drama, Dr Who etc. But the tv goes thru the second stereo & I'll often watch shows just because they've got great soundtracks, e.g. Dr Who.

Man, if I'm in the house the music is playing, if I'm driving the music is pumping & if I'm sleeping the music is my snoring.
