Hello strawdog,

Speakers must always be auditioned by a prospective buyer and if possible with the electronics you intend using them with (or a close-enough equivalent).

Otherwise you will most likely receive biased advice from a group of well-meaning individuals (audiophiles) and end up getting more confused than you were at the beginning of your quest.

Having said all that and based purely on my preference for the English sound, my pick would be the Mordurant Short package...... .

I wouldn't bother auditioning the $500 pairs listed as you won't get anywhere near the performance of the more expensive speakers you've listed above.

Regards,

Russ.

As Russ said, auditioning is key. I'd add the Quad 21L2's to your list, which you may be able to get at $1000.

Primary: Macbook air -> (Wi-Fi) -> Squeezebox Touch -> Hegel HD2 DAC -> Dayens Ampino -> Magnepan 1.6QR :)
Secondary (synchronised): Macbook air running squeezeslave -> XTZ A-800 Class D amp -> Quad 21L2

Thanks Russ and danq.
The prob is, when i was trying to decide on an amp the advice i got was to choose my speakers first and then audition the amp with the speakers!! It seems like i need to have at least one piece of equipment to get this ball rolling - but what should come first?!

Thanks for both the above suggestions though! Will look into the Mordaunt Short and look for the Quad - but the list above was mostly compiled from what is actually available for purchase - new or second hand.

Thanks again guys, i know these broad advice questions are hard to answer as each set up / environment / room / music tastes etc will alter the outcome, so any info is appreciated!

CHeck out the classifieds for speakers around the $1k mark. I think you'll do best with second hand..... for the money.

If you're after new speakers for $1000, I'd suggest you aim for some bookshelfs instead - or find something on sale - check the Eastwood Hifi specials page.

Or go 2nd hand - probably pick up some Krix Lyrix Gold or B&W 602's on eBay.

Hi strawdog, tell us what music you listen to and what you want the speaker to do really well.

Def Tech and Paradign would be my advice. I sold Paradigm for 7 years, they are an incredibly consistent maker who never make a bad model. They are pretty neutral & robustly made & also always made to be easy to drive and stable impedance.

Def Tech also make some brilliant speakers, they are one of the most underrated brands out there IMO and similar traits to Paradigm.

On the avoid list, Boston Acoustics have a reputation for unstable ohmage which can kill amps, JBL nearly always have bright treble, which can sound good on short audition but not good long term. M&K will be a bit stubborn to drive ie might need a big amp.

As Cable Con has already said, get in for a listen and don't run round too many shops or ask for too many opinions as that's all you'll get ... opinions.

If this is your first venture into hifi then stik with buying from a dealer as 2nd hand can be a minefield till you get more familiar with technical terms like sensitivity, impedance, matching to a room, environment and matching to decibel and music requirements.

If they sound good to you, they are good.

Keep it simple

If you are so inclined, buy Aussie made, there is a list of manufacturers at the head of this branch of the forum. Krix are awesome and pretty widely available.
