Well that list has me thinking categorising musicians with simplistic terms such as Overrated & Underrated is somewhat pointless in the light of certain bands/ artists inconsistency. Take for instanse Bob Dylan. He's put down some of the most brilliant and some of the most pathetically bloody awful tracks of all time. In fact it's my opinion that popular music, as opposed to un-popular forms such as classical. is mess of the bad and the good. If you don't believe that look at the rise of single tracks sold ( and stolen) on-line at the expense of albums.Overrated;
Jeff Buckley (by far)
Foofighters (close 2nd)
U2
Bruce Springsteen
Bob Dylan
Underrated;
Ben Harper
Rainbow
Black Sabbath (with DIO)
Deep Purple (with Steve Morse)

I see your point about artists 'inconsistency', as someone earlier rated 'Neil Young' overrated (he is one of my all time favs), but I can clearly see their point. Neil Young has such a huge following and avid listeners BUT he is an aquired taste (just like Bob Dylan). So I could see how some would describe both of those artists as 'overrated'.
I like this thread as it makes you look at the artists from a different point of view. And you can start to learn why some of your own favs. are overrated by other people.

*couldn't really think of anyone like GSH. His overt political stances and fast paced spoken word/poetry has had a huge influence on rap. I almost put down Michael Franti (Spearhead/Disposable Heroes of Hypocracy) as MF has borrowed so much from GSH and is certainly more well known to Gen X's. However MF is hardly a household name and a fine artist in his own right. But if you like MF and haven't heard GSH it would be a crime. And if you like GSH check out Spearhead & Michael Franti. A great A/B is GSH's 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' against the Disposable Heroes of Hypocracy's 'TV the Drug of a Nation' - easily YouTubed
Over: Michael Franti (post Disposable Heros)

Under: Mice Parade - 'What it means to be left-handed' is a good place to start. MP is kinda experimental indie pop with some world and electronic touched. Sorta like a hybrid between the Lemonheads, Sonic Youth, Jim O'Rourke (equally over and under), a flamaco guitarist and a laptop. Another good album, although you need to be patient, is 'Collaborations'. That album has extended pastoral remixes by Jim O'Rourke and Nobukazu Takemura (really underrated electronic artist - check out 10th or Sign)

I think a lot of posters here seem to over rate artists simply because they don't like them, without researching and appreciating the impact they have made on other musicians and the general music loving fan.
Under rated: Joe Henry. Excellent artist whose albums are rightfully critically praised, but his work seems to slip under the radar.

Have to disagree. Have noticed many posting artists as 'over' even though they are fans of the artist. I think the 'over' provides a pretext for the 'under' rather than undermining/discrediting the 'over'.

I have to agree here.
While I'm a huge fan of Neil Young, I can see how others (who can't stand his voice) would think he's overrated.
I also can see ( from the Bruce Springsteen comment) that a lot of 'older' artists were best in their early years BUT a lot of people don't have access to that era and only judge on the 'latter' years. (Take Rod Stewart, Elton John, etc), they ALL 'rocked' in their early years but not a lot of non-avid listeners would know.
I am finding this thread very informative (while reading between the lines), and it makes you think a bit more about other peoples 'views' on all these artists or bands.
