Proper testing would be required. The literature suggests jitter is a non issue (pcm to pwm). Audiophiles are prone to want to find differences where they don't exist
Thanks

what is the fault or defect kajak12? Should people avoid buying it as it is faulty?

not faulty or does it have a defect

Aha. Suspected that but thanks for confirming. Alas, maybe a firmware update at some point will give us dsd.

Wont NAD have to pay Sony a licensing fee to pass DSD via HDMI?

Just 'cos you've got over 4000 posts don't mean you can spread any old crap on here, - just 'coz peeps like a laugh and that was funny (if tragic) don't mean that a complete newb can't come and slap you down in his SECOND post. He has rights too ya know. ;)

So it looks like this is another wonder DAC for me to consider. Trouble is that the changes in technology and release of new products is far quicker than my power of decision. At this rate I'll never buy anything.

Now, now, settle pettle(s).

Where were we? Oh yes: "NAD M51 Listening impressions".

Listening to it right now. Sounding bloody good via optical (until USB via Mac OS X Lion is fixed!).

It's at least another class above the DACs I've previously used (including the VERY capable and musical John Kenny JKDAC32), in MY system at least. As the saying goes, YMMV!

...had the pleasure of hearing the m51 paired with Yammy ns-1000s and Krell KAS class a monos today.

These vintage SOTA speakers and amps pretty much left me speechless. Never heard anything quite like it.

The nad felt right at home, but I'm biased of course :)

most important, it did not feel out of place.

Anyone managed to compare the USB input with a dedicated transport + coax entry , like an Audiophileo 2 ? What I mean is , is it a quality USB input or still lacking and below the AP2 / JK modded one ?

Yeah, I believe that's the most important test (for me at least). As of now, the M51 is priced like 200 euros or so less than the Audio GD Reference 7.1, which is considered a great DAC. If the USB input is good enough and it would save the cost of an Audiophileo 2, this would be a VERY nice deal. However, if you would have to use an AP2 to get full advantage of the DAC, it would be a rather indecisive result versus the Ref 7.1 for those interested sole on PC playback, like I am.

USB input is very good but using the Audiophilleo feeding the Coax was better (more powerful bottom end)

Yea - evidently its been tried - with the result being the Audiophlilleo improves things - and I would expect the Off-Ramp to improve things further.

Thanks

The Ref 7.1 is a very different sounding dac to the M51 - I'd be less focused on saving a few hundrd dollars and more focused on picking the one that appeals to you. The ref 7.1 needs an AP2, the M51 can live without one.

Could this mean that audio gd has some serious competition in the 1.5k range?

I have compared the lite dac 83 with the M51 in my system. Had them both so did an A - B comparison. At least in my system, the M51 was much better in every aspect, soundstage, clarity, imaging, etc etc.
I have not heard the AGD 7.1 so cannot give my opinion on it ,but know the Lite compares well to 7.1 but the lite didn't do well against M51, in my setup.

Lite has no USB so comparison done using spdif input of both using Ap2 and a CD transport.

Also compared computer via USB in into m51 and Ap2 into spdif of lite. In all combinations m51 came out on top.

Have you used the pre of the M51 to drive a power amp direct, because that's what I'll be doing and to do away with any physical volume pots!
