I saw on the evening news some bozo's who were hyperventilating about buying the new Apple thingummy tabletty doodad. Some clown had flown from the good old USA to steal a march on his equally deluded countrymen. It seems that Telstra has somehow gazumped Apple by opening their stores at midnight.Peope were lining up in the cold for the privilege of handing over a whole heap of money, just so that they can do a high five for the TV cameras. Even though it was being sold by Telstra it is not compatible with Telstra's 4G network. Go Figure!
Are these people certainly insane or what?

I heard one guy was queueing up on Monday. It's insanity. If it were a cure for cancer I'd expect these type of crowds but not a 3rd generation tablet!

The guy queueing up on Monday was paid. Unemployed truck driver. The device is still the best of its kind due to the quality of the OS and touchscreen. Android is not there yet. Apple have made a mint out of turning feature creep into an event. ALL other companies ought to have learnt that by now.

I had a look at the new ipad3 today.

Looked exactly the same as my wifes ipad2 with the exception of a better resolution screen and that it was heavier. progress indeed.

exactly. though i like the idea of a better than hdtv screen. and 50 grams is not that much heavier. I'm not an apple fanboy. just a realist when it comes to IT functionality. Their ecosystem is draconian, but it works.

Everyone who knows me would regard me as Prof Gadget and an Apple fanboy but I'm curiously happy with my original iPad. Not tempted by the 2 or the 3 really. The Apple TV seems a backwards step for my needs over my Gen 1 Apple TV, a very under rated device. I am interested in the TV rumours though, and likely to update my iPhone 4 if the 5 offers a compelling feature set.

How is this any different to queuing up overnight for concert tickets, Harry Potter books, 1st release (or even re-release) of movies ?

A work collegue came in last night and told me his wife had popped in first thing to get him an ipad from BigW. She saw a half km queue at Apple and JB HiFi but was THE ONLY customer at the Big wubbleU counter!? Easy peasey! and it was cheaper than the Apple Store.

I might add as a new to mobile technology user I dont like the Apple iphone. I bought my first mobile phone 12 months ago (yes you heard me my FIRST mobile ever!) and it is an android with dual sims TV radio and GPS. The proccessor is a bit slow and the touch screen isnt as good as Id been led to believe but it does what I want which is mainly navigation data storage and mp3s with about 1 phone call a week.
I also bought an iphone 3 months ago after I broke the screen on the android by putting a handfull of 30mm nuts in my pocket with it and sitting down.
The iphone has a much better screen and the touch function is better and faster. Thats it. The rest is crap. It is hard to get stuff in or out of it, I cant change the battery easily, Im constantly frustrated by the blocks to usage that Apple have built in to it and itunes is a sh!t of a program.;)
Ive been an Apple user (ibooks and desktops since 1999) and Im getting pretty disallusioned. Im not suprised that Apple have released a product here that cant use the very feature it heralds in it's ads.
Thats my take on Apple. :)

Hybrid, what phone do you have that takes dual SIM's? That is a feature l looked for recently but the only phones l could find that did this were basic models from Indian companies l have never heard of. Just got a 4s yesterday, my first Smartphone. It does the job but then l am a very basic user, it makes good phone calls and that's me 99% content.

I got it from a Chinese site based in Hong Kong. Deal Extreme. I think that many of their Android phone come with features not available from the mainstream. However Im told that they are not built to the same exacting standards or have the latest 'guts'. Not that that makes any difference to me. I found the dual sim useful in Europe and Japan where I got an ultra cheap prepaid sim for the time I was there. It saves a lot in roam costs apparently and still gives the user an option of the original number. The TV does work in Australia too as does the radio. The camera is crap.
I have a mobile at work but until 12mts ago refused to have one at home. A couple of recent emergencies have convinced me to get a phone. That and the fact that my Zen mp3 player bit the dust and I had to splash out on another. Ive combined the 2 and saved a motza. I dont expect hifi when Im running or at my desk in the clinic and use CDs or vinyl at home. So the phone is just the shot. It can tell me how to get to my destination too, BONUS!

wouldnt have a clue LP. to clarify I was talking abotu the original one we grabbed when it was released !

I think the new one has better screen, camera and faster processor network, but not something have the old one wanting in regards so stick to what we have. maybe if ours died we'd look at the latest and greatest. :)

It may sometimes work a bit easier, but that is because it is a closed platform, limited to hardware approved by Apple. I've seen enough people getting frustrated with their Apples to know they don't "just work". Aesthetics? Plenty of decent looking PCs and it's not really something I look for in a PC.

My experience is that it usually works easier. not just for me, but someone like my wife who was computer & phone phobic just uses her closed platform products without problems. That was never the case when we had PCs: she was always crashing it, losing data, confused by 'wizards' and found it too complex. I waster money buying her Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones that she was frightened of and barely used, she didn't even know how to charge the Sony ericsson after 2 years she was so indifferent towards it. She uses her iPhone all the time, loves her MacBook Air and I don't have to touch it as it just works. I accept that this isn't everyone's experience, it's good that there's so much choice but the closed ecosystem makes sense to me. I wouldn't queue up overnight for a product though.

It's certainly a balancing act. I've always preferred Windows but a lot of this is what you are used to. At the end of the day it is programme design which irritates me a lot more than operating system design and bad programme design is platform agnostic.

I was thinking of getting a 'pre loved' iPad 1 to use solely as a remote for my SB Touch.

Analogue setup: 1986 Townshend Rock Mk2/AO rewired RB250/Soundsmith retipped VdH DDT-II special, Marshall Leech head amp, Copland CSA-14, Castle Howards.
PC System: i7 win8, T Amp, Monitor Audio Monitor One.
Digital System: Squeezebox Touch, DVD P181 as transport for CD, Audio gd NFB2.

Plus 4 additional TTs

No Sub-woofers were used in the reproduction of this sound

That's what I did to my first gen iPad when I got the 2. I had bought the first gen unit in the US when it first launched so it was without 3G connectivity. Took the opportunity to get a 3G capable iPad 2 so the iPad 1 was used at home as a dedicated remote for iTunes Remote.

Really???

The Iphone4 is the worst phone I have ever used. It is an Ipod with phone functionality thrown in. the ipad is a large ipod with 3G built in, its aim and sole purpose is to get closer in achieving a paperless society!!!

Except the iPhone preceded the iPod Touch :P
