Well, mad March has started in Adelaide again, with Clipsal (vroom, vroom) about to start and the Fringe has been on for a week or so. There are numerous events and shows on, so I thought a thread where members could share experiences would be a good idea.

Whilst I will concentrate on music shows, there might be a comment or two on other activities. I don't believe I will be commenting on the Clipsal after-party concerts. Nor WOMAdelaide. Others might.

We saw Judith Lucey at Thebby Town hall on Friday night. It was hot and steamy in the Hall which refelected the weather, and Judith's sense of humour. Not too much melodic content in Judith's voice though. The hall was absolutely chockers, and those who brought a fan were very fortunate.

On Sunday night, we went to 'Sunday Light Live' - a Bee Gees tribute band peforming at the Colnel Light Hotel. We saw a Boz Scaggs tribute band at that venue last year - the band was excellent but the venue acoustics and the mixing was abominal. This year, acoustics were fine and the mixing was much improved - an occasional plunge into excessive bass that had fixtures vibrating but these were short-lived. The place was packed, generally 50+ age group, probable average age was 60. It is a small venue so perhaps 150 people at $20 each.

The band - a husband (Barry) and wife (Maurice) with a young 16 year old who has been working with this group for many years (Robin). Plus a drummer and a keyboard player. Barry looked the part, but the star of the show was the young Robin. His rendition of all of Robin's songs eg Massacheutts (sp?) was outstanding. I hope I have the roles of Robin and Maurice around the right way. We were pleasantly surprised with young Robin being outstanding. I think there is one other performance to come.

In a weeks time, I am going to see an Adelaide Pink Floyd tribute band at the Ed Castle on Currie Street - again about $25 a ticket It should be fun. I think there are three performances at different venues.

Otherwise, we have a mixture of the burlesque and a brass band to come - Fringe is always fun.

Clipsal is almost a drain, but a hell of a lot of fun

We saw The Ring, Wagner, Animated as a part of the Fringe by More Than Opera from Vic. The live music and singing (in English) was quite good, but the animation was a little silly at times. It was a good attempt at condensing 18 hours of opera down to about 2 hours.

Thanks Frankn- interesting. Saw flamenco in Madrid in 1992 - pretty impressive.

Last night we saw 'Big and Brassy' at the Norwood Centre (behind the Norwood Hotel. It was the Kensington and Norwood Brass band! Average age of attendees was 60+. Venue acoustics were average. There are other performances, but I would only suggest it if you are a real brass band fan. They did have a raffle! And the bar is open.

We went to a Jazz concert at the Promethean last year and personally would never go there again. It is one of the worst live venues I have ever attended.

Thursday night (last night) - The Ed Castle on Currie Street (opposite the Remand Centre)

Saw Peter Pan there. I was really worried that I had encouraged someone to attend a disaster - fortunately, my worries were misplaced. It was disappointing that a small 'band' was playing before AND INTO the time that the official show was meant to play. At least the other band didn't get to play their last song. After they left, the room was cleared, and the official show band set up. 40 minutes after the official start time, we were under way (9.40 pm). And there were two sets of 45 minutes with a 15 minute break. My wife and I left at 11.30pm, and the place was still rocking along to Pink Floyd tunes. Didn't get a chance to say goodbye to Peter Pan - apologies.

The tribute band was really good - they are having further performances at Adelaide Town Hall, and at Deviation Rd winery next to Loftia Park (not far from Bridgewater). Hopefully Peter Pan will comment, but I am happy to recommend this band to any Adelaide Pink Floyd tragic. The band has a website http://www.echoesofadelaide.webs.com/

It was great fun to see a number of male Pink Floyd tragics in their late 50's or so bopping along to the tunes, although they were fairly well fuelled by the time the show finally started.

Regarding the earlier band - I didn't buy their t-shirts, and I didn't need to consider whether to buy their album, as they left the copies home. I recall the bands name, but I am trying to forget it, so I won't mention it here.

Tuesday night - James Bond Movie Themes at The Promethean (Grote Street, near the bus depot)

A very small venue. Ticket said 7.30pm, so they opened the doors at 7.30pm (people had been waiting for 30 minutes), then the band started about 8.05. Information projeted on the screen implied free "Bond' theme drinks, but they weren't. You could get Moneypenny champagne and vesper Martinis. We did the champagne (2 blokes, 2 wives) with a couple of pale ales. Sat upstairs as the downstairs were 'reserved'.

Not impressed with the arrangements at The Prometheum.

The band started - essentially it was playing the introduction to a dozen or so Bond Movies on a projector, with a three piece band and two vocalists. We went home, and played Quantum of Solace on the home theatre. Honestly, the band was better.

As disappointed as we were with The Promethean, the actual Bond tribute performance was really good, and I would happily see it again, preferably at a different venue. The acoustics were not as dreadful (upstairs) as I feared from Rantan's experience. Perhaps he was just talking about the venue - I would agree with Rantan - the venue was very poor.

was a good night, really enjoyed the music. thanks for bringing this to my attention. will definately see them again in the future, being a early 50's floyd tragic? lol. having seen roger waters in melbourne only a few weeks ago, was always going to be a hard act to follow? but overall i was absolutely happy with the music and their choice of songs was great, specially the last song being comfortably numb! one of my persoanal favs. my g/f ( not a floyd tragic ) also really enjoyed the music and commented very favouribly on the performance. as for that other band? nuff said! .................... !

Just saw that Echoes (the Pink Floyd tribute band from Adelaide) is playing this Friday night at the Edinburgh Castle (on Currie Street, nearly down to West Terrace, opposite the remand Centre. Starts at 10pm, cost is $15 at the door.

This is the same band at the same venue that Peter Pan and I saw during the fringe. It was a good show, especially if you are a Pink Floyd Tragic. If you do go, don't plan on leaving till well after midnight - they play late!
