Hi all, my name is Chris and I would really like some advice on home hi fi. I have spent the last couple of hours reading through the forum topics and my head is spinning more than ever. I never considered half the options that I have read here this afternoon/ tonight. I am a massive movie fan, popular and contemporary music enthusiast and occaisional gamer. I currently run the following gear and am would like to upgrade to a hdmi friendly receiver.
I have a Denon AVR 1802 receiver, a Denon DVD 2900 (that the disc tray won't open) and consequently my wife bought a pioneer DVD player with USB input out of sheer frustration. I have a set of Jamo E 470 floor standers, a pair of Jamo E 800 book shelf rears, a Jamo E 8Centre and an ALR Jordan Entry sub woofer.
I have a very large room around 7 x 8 metres with a 50 inch Panasonic plasma. I currently run a set of outdoor speakers through the Denon B set speakers.
My dream is to be able to Multi zone from the one amp so my kids can watch a DVD and I can listen to my iPod, radio or cd outside enjoying a beer on my deck.
2 questions:- what model and how much should I look to spend to get a receiver that will answer my prayers? And secondly should I look at upgrading my speakers to cope with any upgrade of receiver?
Sorry for the long first post. I have really enjoyed reading the other forum topics

Hi Chris,

Sounds like you might need a 2 Zone AVR. That will let you do as described, have two different sources playing in different areas. ie: 5.1 movie in one room and CD/Ipod/radio or whatever in another. Starting prices should be about $600-700. Make sure though that the amp has a POWERED zone 2 otherwise you are up for anothe rpower amp to run the 2nd Zone. Yamaha have the RXV 571 (I think that's 2 zone, if not it'll be the 671) and Onkyo have the 579. They might set you back a bit more but are decent amps. The Yammy has an ipod app that'll allow control of the amp remotely which is handy while you are out on your deck.. I think the Onkyo have the same.

Hope this helps mate...and welcome to SNA!

Cheers

M

Agree with unclemack, but would not go for 576 or 571 - I had one and upgraded to higher model yamaha. I would go for Yamaha RXV 667 or RXV 671. Read the reviews, Price is not much more than 571. 671 is newer 667. Dont know Sonos. I like the Denon's, but dont know the model numbers. Google for prices.

Thanks for the advice. Any recommendations on stores in Melbourne. Where I bought all my gear originally is no more unfortunately. Would love to speak to a Techspert about my speakers. I am thinking of donating the 1802 and my e 470's to my parents in law so I can get some decent sound when I visit.

My apologies if this takes the thread in a different direction, but it relates to 'Help Me Please'.

All things being equal I have choice to make between:-

  • Audio signal from TV to amplifier using medium quality RCA interconnects (Left + Right), e.g. $30 or so.
  • Audio signal from TV to DAC using Toslink-type optical cable, then DAC to amplifier using medium quality RCA interconnects.
Not sure if it helps in your recommendation of option 1 or option 2, but cable length from TV to amp or DAC would be about 1.8m. And the DAC offers 192KHz/24 bit processing.

There may be positives and negatives of each option, but don't know what these would be. It may be apocryphal, but I heard that optical cable can give mixed results.

Any help greatly appreciated.
