How would you rate your listening ability?

I would rate myself as Cloth-ears, or maybe realist.

critically listening and evaluating audio equipment for 28 years as a full time profession gives me somewhat of an edge in how i perceive what i hear, not what anyone else hears. "golden ears" as a state or reference point is only education, knowledge and resources to make a change and being aware of how and why. nothing mystical, just observation and experience both positive and negative.

I don't think the term "Golden Ears" has a place in this hobby.

It has condescending aspects to it when ever used in forums, but I can detect small changes.

It's all different from one person to another Drizt, what may be a minute difference for one person may be a lot more noticeable to another, and the other way round..

I was trying to NOT pick the first one because of the term "Golden Ears", as the term has no place in this hobby IMO as I stated before, but the second one didn't seem to be a good fit either.

spot on ! and helps if familiar with system, material etc. makes spotting changes all the easier as comfortable enough with the baseline or standard. so any deviations more apparent :P

but yeah if dont know what changes listening for can make pretty hard to pick them even if familiar with the system sound and material !

I believe for most of us, this is not so much whether you have 'goldern ears' but whether you have learn't what the differences are. You need to expose yourself to different systems and sources to understand the broader picture.

Having plasma tweeters myself for two years I noticed i am able to notice the differences between tweeters more than before.

I find for myself that i generally can walk past systems playing and easily pick up whether they are good or not without focussing, but have learnt from others what makes up the various differences i'm hearing. I have also noticed my hearning is sensitive to certain types of noises but fine with music.

I also believe that some people are naturally gifted at assessing the results of what they hear.

I sit between the golden ears and pretty good.

Well you're closer than you might think with your last comment . . with which I agree, by the way.
But it's not really about detecting what someone else's ears are doing.

Not sure how to explain this but it's more a feeling of Déjà moo . .
You know . . it's that feeling you get when you suddenly realise you've heard this bull**** somewhere before. :thumb:

Nup, looks like I didn't.

But didn't we have this Déjà moo conversation previously?
I thought we came to the conclusion that some people can't even decide what might constitute a small difference . . let alone figure out if they can hear it or not . . . but I could be wrong*.
