That's a good insight into 'bootlegs' devluke. I agree that the quality isn't very good for most bootlegs, which is why I don't bother with them. I would much rather buy the official live release (as it has been professionally recorded) and get much more enjoyment from the better quality sound.
On the subject of artists, Ben Harper openly encourages 'bootlegs' of his own concerts as he like his fan base to come from more 'underground' and not be influenced so much by 'radio'!

Sometimes though there just isn't a live album available. Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett? All that exists is a very low fi bootleg (and that is being generous). Jethro Tull before about 1978, nothing but bootlegs and one side of Living in the Past. If you get sound board recordings they can be very good, but sometimes you can only get bootlegs.

There are loads of Deep Purple 'soundboard' series live concerts coming out nowdays. Plus they 'officially' released some bootlegs that were of decent quality.
But as much as I like DP they are flooding their catalogue with live releases to the point of being ridiculous! I mean how many live concerts (of the SAME songs) can you really listen too?

Will they ever release a box set like everyone else?
I'm still waiting for it!

Box set of what?
Posted 19 March 2012 - 10:54 AM
Deep Purple............like the Led Zep one.
I've not come across one yet.

Wouldn't do them justice!
There have been countless 'best ofs' that are just ridiculous (in terms of content). They have too many 'line-ups' (unlike Led Zep) with varying styles to make up a definative box set.
They are a unique band that just don't fit in the mold of a 'box set'.....sorry LP, you just have to buy all the CDs!
The Led Zep box Set works well.
And Black Sabbath have a box set (with ALL the Ozzy albums).
A thread for 'box sets' and 'best of' albums would be good, to let people (who don't know much about a particular band) get a 'good' best of. Not like some of these DP best ofs that contain such obscure songs and miss out on the 'real' best songs.

I have the remastered Sabbath one.
It's a cracker.
The DP best ofs are crap.

+1
With the exception of 'Deepest Purple'. It was the first DP record I bought (with my own money) and it really has a good selection of tracks that are 'the best'.

I thought that too.......until I started buying the Roger Glover remastered albums..................almost as good as the vinyl!

Are you referring to the DP 25th and 30th Ann. remastered versions?
Because if so I think they sound too tinny or airy and lack bass. (in a nutshell). It's funny when you get so used to the original versions that even if an album is 'remastered' it doesn't necessarily make it 'sound' better to you ears! But maybe on a higher quality system I might find otherwise?

Ehe, am a huge DP fan myself, but don't like the In Rock anniversary edition. Not so much the sound quality , just all em extra songs throwing me off. Have the same problem with The Who "Live at Leeds".
Prefer the song sequence from the original. Too used to the original version I guess :/

I liked the anniversary edition.........along with Live In Leeds.
On the Slade Alive reissue.........you get heaps of stuff.............but what they put on the LP was the best.
The Fireball remastered CD is a cracker.
(but this is why I only rip the songs I like.)
Oh.........the Free Live CD is great too!
