Sony S370 BRP > Optical downmix> Rotel RSP976 > Analouge > EP2000 > Speakers

So far i've watched a few movies with this setup, and everything was good. But tonight i was watching a movie and all of a sudden the dialogue was drowned out by a loud and constant static sound.

Popped the disc out and put a cd in, and all was fine, went back to the movie, all good. But then again after about 10 mins the same thing happened again. Didn't matter if i paused, skipped scenes ect, the sound stayed there, and only goes away if i open and close the tray. (note when pausing everything went quiet so i can rule out noise from the power amp)

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing this? Could it be a firmware related issue? I've never updated the BRP's firmware in the 2+ years i've owned it, so far there hasn't been any issues.

Does it happen on other discs?

On the few other movies i've watched nothing has happened. Also it's not around a certain timeline on the disc either, once i sort the issue by opening / closing the tray i can play the same scene back without any problems. It was a new disc too.

I've switched it all off now but i'll have another play around with it tommorow, and look into firmware updates.

It could be a firmware related issue.

The other thing to try would be to swap the optical cable out.

Lastly, have a look at your bitstream settings on the BRP.

It might be worth checking for possible sources of RF interference near your equipment. I once had a video sender device located next to my Marantz AVR, and it caused intermittent logic malfunctions (one of which was a loud buzz of static through all the speakers at once). Stopped using the video sender, and no more problems.

Hi Bus_Boy,

It would be helpful if you filled us in on a few points to assist in tracking down the problem -
  • Disc title (BR or DVD?)
  • What audio track were you playing (DD5.1, dts, etc)
I'm a bit confused by this statement -

Didn't matter if i paused, skipped scenes ect, the sound stayed there, and only goes away if i open and close the tray. (note when pausing everything went quiet so i can rule out noise from the power amp)

So I'm assuming that when you PAUSED the movie there was no sound? This is to be expected as there are a pair of transistors in the analogue outputs which short out the signal when the machine is in PAUSE mode.
Was the sound you heard like a loud hissing sound?

Cheers,
Alan R.

Hi Alan,

Im not sure on what audio track it was on, in the BRP settings i have it set to 2ch down mix, the movie was "The book of Eli" Blu Ray title. It was sort of a hissing sound, but a lower deeper note, the dialouge was barely audible when it was making this noise.

I have since taken the pre-procesecor out, as it was dirtying up the signal going to the amp which i discovered when playing music. I tried both analoge in, and digital in using the procesecor's dac, and the sound was very un pleasant, a lot of break up i the midrange vocals were awful.

I've plugged the analouge outputs straight into the power amp, and the sound is a lot cleaner, it's actually quite enjoyable considering the amp's intended application (EP2000) The only problem now is i don't have any control of the volume unless i get up.

I'm thinking about buying the "Emotiva" dac, as i'm only decoding 2ch aside from the sub, and it has a built in pre stage with a volume on the remote.

Emesbee,

I can't think of anything that would interfere, due to my shortage of available power outlets i only ever run what is nessacary .The amp was on the bottom shelf, BRP midway, and the prosecsor on the top shelf. I've always run all my cables in seperate directions away from each other. It's got me stumped.

Hmmm.... sounds like that pre-pro might have a problem. In 99.9% of pre-pros the incoming bitstream (DD, dts etc) is converted to PCM before decoding to audio via the internal DACs. Why it's not detecting (or didn't detect) the bitstream type is anyone's guess, but the fact the sound is sounding obviously not good suggests to me it might be faulty.

The Emotiva XDA-1 2 channel DAC will handle all LPCM bitstreams to 24 bit / 192kHz except via the USB port which is choked at 48kHz sampling. Just remember to set the bitstream output on your BR player to PCM as the XDA-1 only decoded PCM data, not DD, dts etc.

Cheers,
Alan R.

On your BDP, make sure that you have both the Dolby Digital and DTS settings correct for 2 channel down mix.
