I have been a fan of the (originally) Tasmanian brand Blue Banner pickled onions since they appeared in the local (Sydney) market back in the 80's.
They were a standout product, crisp and with a good strong liquor.
They were the only pickled onion on the market worth buying, IMO.
Apparently many others agreed and they became more commonly available (I was originally buying them from the old Grace Bros supermarket in the now defunct Broadway store.
The years rolled by, sometimes they were not so crisp, it seemed they had difficulties in sourcing good onions from time to time, but they would usually come back from that to approach their early glory.
Recently bought a jar, nearly could not understand what had happened to the flavour, had a second one and merely reinforced my opinion that they now taste like every other soggy, sweet, imitation of a pickled onion available on the supermarket shelves.
Looking at the label, made by Rosella foods, Seven Hills.
Whacko, another one to cross off the shopping list, to think this once great iconic Australian company once also made the best plum jam in the business, Myra Plum jam to be exact, they killed that one off long ago, now they have delivered the coup de grace to the Blue Banner brand.
Da**ed accountants should be barred from making production decisions about food products, heaven help you all if they get into the wineries and breweries, but then, maybe they have.
Nestle ruined the former Black Magic chocolate selection when they took over, replacing all the distinctive centres with non-descript bland creme centres reminiscent of the junk that fills easter egg boxes.
Mars took over Starburst and promptly messed with the product to adverse effect, though they seem to have recovered from that to large degree.
I must be getting too old :party
I will be writing letters to the editor soon.

I think that big companies are much more risk averse than small ones. They'll always steer the safe course unfortunately (with the probable exception of Apple and Google). It's a shame, they buy a good company and 'blandify' the product.

colinm I think that it depends where you look, don't go to Coles or woolies if you want innovative quality products, go to the local farmer's market.

I hate bean counters, all they are interested in is the bottom line and always looking to cut corners at all costs. They should not be put in management or decision making positions. They continue to destroy good products and companies. I am sure you are aware that there are companies whose sole purpose of being is to buy up smaller companies and strip them of their assets (and to create monopolies). There should be laws against this.

Farmer's Markets sell whatever the producer wants to make, it's fresh and seasonal, and because you deal directly with the producer you have a much more direct influence on the type of products on offer.

Don't go to the big 2 whenever possible!

They only want to monopolise EVERY sector of the market!

AND you aren't getting the quality that you think!

Stick to your local fruit shop and butcher, better quality generally (not refrigerated for months and artificially coloured and ripened), and more personalised service ( which is sadly lacking in our society these days. Give the small guys a go and don't let these 2 multinational conglomerates (with NO morals) railroad all our local community produce outlets.

We went back to our local butcher a while back and the quality of the meat has been amazing. Plus we know what we are getting, and they tell us about the quality and the best use of each piece of meat we buy. And they are cheaper anyway!......no brainer.......unless your lifestyle is too busy to go to the effort of sourcing your local market over a 'one stop shop' for everything.(and settling for 2nd rate food).

Went to the Canberra Farmer's Markets a few weeks ago. Fantastic produce!

Can’t tell if you're serious or trolling hard. The internet has dulled my sarcasm receptors.

i have the same issue with Hoyts Mild Peppers, they used to be excellent and now they taste sweet and a horrid tang....

the only good peppers i know of now are ones imported from greece and india and these are hard to find.

coles and woolworths are driving prices down so low the suppliers have no choice but to use crap if they want to make a dollar off them, which sux. As the real brands drop off, they are forced out by home brand rubbish.
The more I learn the less I know.

Gawd I hope no-one ever buys Roses Jams.......................another Iconic Tassie brand that's been around since 1865 and makes the best Lime Marmalade and Raspberry Jam in the world (IMHO)

Just be careful when you buy meat at those places, I've been cheated twice at two different Farmer's markets. One of them was the Canberra one. Meat advertised as Lamb was actually hogget or mutton and cheap cuts of beef sold as expensive ones. They usually have a BBQ with good meat served as samples but the ones sold to you (in vacuum sealed plastic bags) are just rubbish. No more for me.

If this did happen to you, you should report the sellers to the market organizers. If they had any integrity, they'd turf them out.

Unfortunately, we live in Sydney and was there only for the weekend. Not worth the hassle. Live and learn.
