Painting people/groups as X or Y is a recipe for another arc up.... it might be humourous until one person doesn't find it so and then the slippery slope prevails.

I sometimes think we (yep, me included) take this hobby / obscession way too seriously. For crying out loud anyone would think we were playing for cattle stations!
The problem with humour is some people just don't appreciate the funny side of it. Like beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder.

Cheers,

If you come to my place, you would question like everyone does why I have dangled a CD below the apex of my verranda. To keep birds out. It even has an outline of a cat drawn into it. This was a pest control on a web site!!! Man what was I thinking? It somehow attracted more birds! that wasn't funny!!! I hate bird poo all over my covered out door living area! lol HEHEHE

I think for the most part, its very difficult to get a sense of tone and meaning when reading words on a screen VS hearing them spoken to you, and things can be misinterpreted very easily.

Yes agreed a bit like owning a 'decent' system with lovely glowing tubey things, to hear real tone and sense of meaning... Or, humurously buying solid state and misinterpreting it all.:party:D

Humour and Hifi - often the two don't go together and I'm quite often amazed at the blowups that occur here, and how long they drag on for.....................................................................

I'm a Mod on a photography forum, and you'd expect the old Canon vs Nikon debate to be a hot subject at times, but if well managed, it can generate some brilliant humour without any angst.
Photography forums are notorious for attracting 'full of their own importance wankers', and people who post just so other people can go 'ooooh, ahhhh, how wonderful are you'.

There's one forum rule on our little place - you must possess a sense of humour - if you don't you are not welcome. This is made very clear at the outset.
We are lucky if we see one reported post a week now.
We manage it by simply erasing any contentious post without entering into debate or discussion outside the Mod Group. If the poster complains we simply ignore them.
It doesn't take long for them to figure out for themselves where the line is, and they either behave appropriately or leave quietly and look for more fertile hunting grounds.
Win Win for everyone.
Cheers, Andrew

Wow, I had forgotten how old this thread is.

While things can get a bit serious here, thank goodness there are some members who realise the value of good humour and sometimes outrageous silliness.
As a result I still manage to laugh out loud at some posts.

May there be all the more humour on SNA.

Only just on-topic, but...

A few year ago a friend of mine who (like me at the time) had a passing interest in audio emailed a link to me to a review in an online audio zine. The review was of a $$$many-thousand$$$ digital cable. The reviewer explained how this SPDIF cable did all sorts of wonderful things for his system - the quote I remember was, "It got me tapping my feet like no other digital cable I've had in my system before."

Anyway, this review was emailed to me purely so my friend and I could laugh at the idea that a $6k cable could have all these magical qualities (and we did laugh).

A couple of years later, I'm scouring stereo.net (and the rest of the net) for user reviews of not only digital cables, but USB/SPDIF converters, RF attenuators, even USB connectors for ****'s sake. I even had a go at explaining to that old friend of mine why jitter exists and how it affects digital audio...

The only way to interpret this (IME) is to conclude that I've become the butt of my own joke. So yes, in this case at least, humour and hifi are coexisting.
