Earlier this year I bought a D7000 with an 18-200 Nikkor lens for my trip to Europe. Great range and I only needed 1 lens but it sure was a heavy camera. I want to buy a prime, anywhere from 28 to 50mm. Any recommendations? It'll be used for general photography when I want to travel lighter, portraits, landscapes, occasional macro.

regards Michael

I would recommend 50mm 1.4 as well. 1.4 should get really good low light as well as lot of out of focus shots. But if you are really into people photography check out 85mm as well

Another one for the Nikkor 50 1.4. Its my favourite all purpose lens used extensively for portraits and also for stitched panorama landscape work.

FYI I also have the 85 1.8.........excellent for portraits but too long for landscapes

Don't forget Prof that the D7000 is a crop body so the 50 will effectively be 80 or thereabouts. I run my lenses on an FX sensored D700.

A 50mm is probably a good move. I have the 50/1.8 and although I hardly use it on my D700, it becomes 75mm on a D7000 so closer to being a portrait lens. The 1.8 is quite light and plasticy but also very cheap.

Good to see some other Nikon shooters here :)

You just reminded me I have a 50 1.8 laying around here that I don't use any more! A very good entry level 50 it is.

Ahh just reread you post Andrew, you too have a D700. Isn't it a dream to use? We had our work Xmas do last week and I used the D700 with an SB800 and it just worked. Best metering I've had in a camera. +1 on the 85/1.8 too.

You have both 1.4 and 1.8, so was the 1.4 a good value?

I thought long and hard and bit the bullet for 1.4. I thought it's soft wide opened but very nice at 2.2

The 50mm/1.4 and 85mm/1.8, both already recommended are both excellent for available light photogrsphy, indoors at concerts when no flash is allowed. They will also allow you pop the subject out of the background more easily with their shallow depth of field capabilities in portraiture. They could also be used with extension tubes, close up lenses for more extreme macro.

Along with the excellent 18-200 you already have, you won't need anything else unless you feel like a bit of wildlife photography, surveillance or astro.

Best

I would check out the EXIF data from your photos you generally take when on holiday.

The reason I say this, when we were on our last big trip the majority of my images were taken under 50mm

Also IMO for a crop camera I'd probably opt for a 35mm lens, which will get you close to a 50mm lens equivalent used on a FF body.

50mm lenses are great outside and for portraits. If you intend to take many interiors - say at a GTG, a 35mm or even 28mm is much better. Another option is a 85mm+ Macro lens which double for portraits etc. Macro lens + Ring Flash = fun

I'm not sure, there should be a number of reviews and examples from this lens around the net.

I mostly use zoom lenses, but do have a couple of primes for different occasions.

For lighter travel, I'm considering a 16-85mm DX.
Review here.
After lugging 12-24mm f4, 17-55mm f2.8 and 80-200mm f2.8 around on our last holiday, my back reckons the little 16-85 is looking pretty good :)
Cheers, Earle.

Another lens comes to mind, the AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 40mm F2.8 macro would make for a nice compact setup.

Yes, the 1.4 is a tad soft wide open - but that's a plus for female portraits in some ways. It's sweet spot is between 2.2 and 3.5 where it nails it!

I love the D700 mate, its low light capability is staggering, especially with large aperture lenses.
I have:
50 f1.4
50 f1.8
85 f1.8
105 f2.8 macro
70-200 f2.8 zoom

Just have to save up the pennies for the new 35mm FX 1.4, but geez it's expensive.

SWMBO recently bought one to use on her D5100 and she's pretty happy with it. Interesting to note that Nikon lenses have a worldwide warranty.... Her's was ordered from the UK so no VAT charged either. She's also got an old 50mm f1.8 lens which only works with manual focus (or maybe it was only ever manual anyway) - these are really cheap as so many were made but still good quality.

Most likely an AF lens, the D5100 doesn't have a build in focus drive, so you need to get AF-S lens for auto focus. The "s" stands for Silent wave motor.

I have a 16-85 and its a cracker. Its not the fastest or the lightest, but as for construction and sharpness and nice focal range I reckon its the pick of the dx zooms.

Awesome. I Personally have the Nikkor 50mm f1.8D on my D7000
Why did only one person recommend the 35mm prime? Thats my next purchase!

Since ppl are listing their lenses:
Nikkor 50mm f1.8D
18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 (d70 kit lens)
18-105mm nikon kit lens

Right now wanting to buy an 80-200mm ED f2.8 and a wide lens maybe 12-24 and most definitely a 35mm prime!

Guys is it really worth upgrading to the 50mm f1.4 if i have the f1.8?

If you are wanting an equivalent of a 50mm with a crop sensor then the 35mm would give you the closest to the same angle of view.

Mate, the Nikkor 50 f1.4 is a VASTLY superior lens to the 1.8. Chalk and cheese, go for it!
