Hey all,
I'm off to buy a bluray player tonight, I was just wondering if someone could recommend one?

Likelyhood is it will be under the $170 mark.

I am happy to get something cheaper. I may head down to JB Hifi for one if they have any good specials too.

Must buy tron hehe

I bought the Sony BDPS380 for a bit less than $170 recently. It has co-axial output (no optical) and can play SACD's.

JB have some decent specials on at the moment.

With your budget, you should be able to get something from Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG et al.

Let us know what you end up with.

Russ.

Thanks very much once again for all your help. I did end up going to JB.

I ended up going for a Samsung BDD5300 BluRay Player, it performs beautifully.

I did also plurge a bit, I purchased the full star wars bluray Collection which looks fantastic even on my Soniq 42" Full HD Screen hehe.

I guess thats where things can get a bit sketchy haha. The unit feels strong enough but i'm not so sure on the quality. It was about $36 from JB-hifi. (so probably not a decent one lol)

Another vote for the Sony S380. I picked one up from JB recently for about $150.

Hope you also bought yourself a decent HDMI cable?

For a 1m cable run, you won't notice any difference in picture quality between a $20 cable or a $200 cable. Everyone knows expensive HDMI cables are just snake oil

I have a s470 and a s580 Sony bpd, I wasn't planning to go Sony because of there reputation on laser quality, It may not be region free for bluray but they play everything and no issues laser readings compared to previous models. The samsung I have has reading problems as well!!!

I too have the 370, and it get's a lot of use. I haven't compared it to any other players, because at the time it was pretty much the cheapest BRP from a well known manafactuer.

If yu have a 1080 panel, yu wont be disappointed on the sony range, they are value for money, only bad points: slightly noisy spinner and you cant select tracks direclty, must use forward/reverse to find tracks on CD.

The Sony 370 is indeed an excellent value for money player, but it is not true that it can play everything. I have a Sony music DVD (von Karajan plays Four Seasons) that it can't play. Not a fault of the disc as it plays fine on an Oppo 980H.

Prior to the Sony I bought a Samsung BD-C6900 on run-out price, just a little more than $200. The Samsung was a significant step up on the 370 in terms of picture and sound. On Blu-ray material the picture difference was not big; but for upscaling DVD the Samsung was heaps better, smoother edges and more vibrant colour. Audio wise the 6900 created a wider and much deeper sound stage, and music has more weight and presence. In comparsion the Sony was a bit hard, more forward and congested. Unfortunately the Samsung skips on many of our imported DVD, and we had no choice but returned it for a 370.

I mainly got mine to play avi files off USB drives, DVD's and SACD's........and the occasional music CD.
I thought it was great value for $180!

I am using a Sony PS3 (old version) for Blu-ray/DVD's, and like the fact that it upsamples, and doubles up for playing games. Seems to be pretty good value all round.

If I had a choice for a dedicated player, I would get the Oppo with 7.1 analogue input option...

I would go the S380. Biased as I have an S370, but at least the S380 can do SACD over HDMI, whereas the others cannot.
