ep 1 is crap by all accounts - it was shot on 35mm stock film, and not 70mm like the originals and digital like eps 2 and 3. It's been over DNR'd and looks like shyte house. ep 2 is better, but not perfect. ep3 is the best PQ wise of the new trilogy. All of the original trilogy look brilliant by all accounts, other than some colour issues that a few whiners are whinging about. Big deal - if it lasts a 1/10 of a second I don't give a crap about colour accuracy blah blah blah. Blacks aren't the best, by crikey guys - these are 34 year old movies (star wars), 31 year old movies (empire) and 28 year old (return). What did you expect?
That said - by all accounts, the digital remastering on the old trilogy isn't as good as it could, or should have been. For those expecting a superb job like with Blade Runner or An American Werewolf in London, forget it. Those 2 blu rays are STUNNING.
Anyways, I'm off to have a quick dinner, then watch Star Wars ep 1 a new hope on Blu ray (barring any issues with my blu ray player not wanting to play it of course, and if so, I'll duly report back).
May the force be with you!

Going to war over religion is like killing someone because your imaginary friend is better than theirs.
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I'm sure you mean ep IV a new hope
I was expecting these to be really disappointing, but this review makes me think they are actually worth purchasing again.
I watched ep 1 phantom menace on my Oppo 95 and was shocked at how bad the DVD still looked, so it doesn't suprise me that the blu-ray hasn't fixed all the issues with that. As long as the pod race sounds good I'll be happy.
It seems a reasonable job was done on the original trilogy, and the sound is really good.

Colour timing is an important issue with the originals and crushed blacks are not good. By using the 04 masters any tinkering they did for these blu rays won't bring back that detail.
For a company that prides itself on quality visual's and effects, these mistakes alone are terrible and should not be present. Not to mention all the other stuff that they can't be bothered fixing such as various matte lines and lightsabers. Lazy.

Ooops, yep ep IV. Typo on my part! My recollection of ep 1 on dvd was that it wasn't that bad IQ wise, not superb, but dvd PQ is rarely superb imho.
Pretty sure the OT wasn't shot on 70mm.. there were some prints that were shown in 70mm but weren't actually shot that way. I could be wrong, but I am fairly sure.

You could be right, I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that the original 3 were shot on 70mm negs. I'd have to dig out some of my collectible Star Wars books to confirm, or dig around on the net. Perhaps I'm wrong though. From my experience, very few blu rays do a great job of black points. That's typically cos the original movies sucked at detail in black areas. You can't blame the technology if the original film sucked @ black points. More in PQ/IQ later.
Hmmmm, love the origional 3 movies, but for ep's 1 to 3, doesn't matter how good the colour is, you can't polish a turd
I find it amusing that so many people bash the new trilogy. They weren't that bad. Yes, some of the actor was not good. Yes, the scripts could have been better and some of the dialogue is atrocious. Let's remember that Lucas is not a great director or writer, he's a man who knows how to make his vision come alive. Ewan was great as Obi wan imho, Hayden wasn't that bad, certainly not as bad as people make him out to be. Natalie was disappointing imho, and the rest of the supporting cast weren't really allowed to be developed. I note that most adults hated Jar Jar (I loved him to be honest), but most kids LOVED him. My suspicion is that like with the original trilogy, Lucas had elements in the movies for kids, the problem is that those kids of the 70s/80s have grown up now and aren't kids any longer. They're people in their 30s/40s who only seem to remember their vision of the movie from when they were kids, but don't want to be kids and hence criticise any new kid elements in the new trilogy. Pretty sad really.

John, you don't know what you're missing. If you're waiting for the UOT (unedited original trilogy), you won't get it (imho). I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Think I'll wait for the price to fall on Amazon UK
This made me laugh. I picked up the box set for AU $98. Yes, $98. How is that *expensive* pray do tell? Six movies. An extra 3 discs on top of that. That's like, what, $11 a disk? Even allowing for the cost to be split between the six movies, it's like $16 a movie. For a premium blu ray, that's CHEAP.
Now, after having watched 45 min of ANH - wow is all I can say. A few visual oddities were noticed, noise is reasonable, image sharpness is very good for the most part, and great in some parts. This is the best version of the movie released by far. I could not go back to my DVDs or VHS tapes. Black points are quite reasonable. Oh, and I find it amusing again, how many "reviewers" are complaining about black points etc, but aren't running calibrated monitors. If it's not calibrated, you can't comment jack **** about colour accuracy. colours look fine on my calibrated Samsung 245T monitor (a well respected monitor for colour palette and accuracy when calibrated I might add, using a s-pva panel, not cheap crappy tn panel). All I'm hearing is people bitching about the blu ray release but those same people bitching about it haven't (for the most part) seen the damn things in person.
If you're a star wars fan, and have a blu ray system, you can't go wrong imho. Stop being over analytical adults and let the inner kid come out and just chill and enjoy the movies that you loved as a kid. I saw Star wars in 77 as a bright eyed 8 year old. I have over 10k worth of star wars collectibles. I love the movies, warts and all.

I can't say, I don't run a HT setup. I either watch my blu rays on my 24" PC monitor in my bedroom, or occasionally watch them upstairs on the Panasonic 55" plasma with just inbuilt speakers.

For me it is a mixture of memories and excitement of a 10y.o (first time I saw Star Wars IV on the big screen) and the best quality I can own currently to play and enjoy on my HT at home.
Enjoy the memories,

I too have calibrated my PJ and plasma with a colourmeter, these should look terrific and i know that once i watch these BR i won't go back to the DVD copies.
As far as Star Wars goes, i too enjoy the memories of when each movie came out, particularly the very first tv add is saw of Star Wars itself and the daggy jumper i wore when i saw empire strikes back.

Will the Star Wars Blurays from Amazon play on an Australian, Region B Bluray player?
The ones from Amazon UK will.

from Amazon US no - they're region A blu rays (north america/south america only). Amazon UK as Ken said, should work, since UK is region b like Australia. Another reason why hddvd was a far better format.
don't expect blu ray to have a long lifespan - it'll probably be a dead format in the next 5 years imho. When the titles stop coming (in favour of hi res download rental from the Internet), then the players will stop coming. Those like me that have a lot of blu ray titles will be screwed :/ a bit like beta video recorders imho.

If you rip your blurays to your hdd you can remove the region coding etc. You can then stream them to your playback device (like a popcorn hour c200) no matter what region it came from

Downloading full bluray rips from the net would require the NBN to be fully up and running (fast speeds, larger caps, lower costs).
Yeah, you can, but you are breaking the law by doing so. There is no fair clause usage in Australia for that sort of thing - you are bypassing the encryption, and thus breaking the DMCA, which Australia recognises as part of the Fair Trade Agreement with the US. Now one can argue that it's not legislated in Australia, so is not a recognised law, and I'd agree with that argument, but given how corrupt our government is, they'd simply legislate it and backdate it to the date the FTA was signed. If you think your computer operating system isn't secretly phoning home usage data, you're kidding yourself. It's only a matter of time before that's leveraged by governments, either legally and open, or legally and hidden from the public (in the interests of public safety of course). Yes, the only way we can catch "terrorists" is to spy on everyone's computers and Internet connections. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but that time is at hand.

It will happen guys - there's more money for the movie industry to make from rental downloads than physical media. Just like music downloading (example, iTunes) is becoming more and more popular. The physic disc is on the decline. Most people are happy to pay like $5 to rent a digital download movie for the night, than $40 for a movie that they'll probably only ever watch once, maybe twice. And yes, the NBN will make it easier. Don't blame me, I'm a old fogey, I like my discs. It's the younger generation that couldn't care less for discs.
Dave
Im only 24 and dread the day that there is only digital files to download. At the moment the quality of streaming/downloads is horrible, and likely wont be comparable to blu-ray for a very long time. I also prefer to have a physical copy that I can play and move however I want. Yes its easy to do that with files, but there is less hassle using disks than making sure you are backing everything up.

OH, I totally agree with you! I'm not batting for the digital downloads team by any means, but I do believe that the music and movie industries will push it this way. Music is starting to go this way now, and once it becomes the norm with music, it'll quickly spread to movies I fear. And once it's all downloads, you can bet your bottom dollar that the manufacturers will cease supporting hardware based disc systems
