I have an idea that I hope takes off. Audio is a smorgasbord and I like to have a taste of everything. So in the interests of giving people a diverse experience, I'm putting forward the idea of a GTG with multiple hosts.

We need hosts!
I'm looking for offers to host from people with diverse systems that each in their own right are good examples of a particular approach.

Car pooling
We all start at the first venue then perhaps could arrange a bit of a car pool around so the travel becomes part of the day. Better to have a chance to yak from house to house.

Food to share
I'm suggesting that we all bring food to share as this could turn into a big event. Hosts then don't have to feed the masses and we get a nice smorgasbord in more ways than one!

Prelim details
Date: TBA Some time in November if we can make that work.
Time: 10am start

Semi-open invite
Please keep in mind that for security reasons this is not open to everyone. This event is restricted to those who have been around the community and are fairly well known. I can't ask people to offer to host an event like this where unknown people may show up. So as a precaution, and to be fair to the hosts, we'll restrict entrance. I hate to have to do this, but it's necessary. If you are a regular known by all, no problem. Some discretion will be used here, if in doubt shoot me a PM.

Send me a PM if you would like to come.

Hosts

So the idea, apart from having a good time and a good yak, is to give people exposure to different flavours of audio. Systems that have taken a particular approach, have done it well so that they typify the strengths of that approach.

What do I mean by different flavours? Well some examples:

  • a large dynamic horn system (Avantgarde Trios anyone?)
  • electrostats
  • a fully active system
  • a serious DIY system
  • full range driver system
  • exotic speakers - omnis, open baffle, fancy unique drivers, etc
Perhaps we could start with 3?

How does that sound guys? I won't be hosting just yet, but happy to get the ball rolling and do some organising to make it happen. Who would like to host? Ideas, suggestions, comments? I think this could be a great community event :)

Paul, what you are trying to get going is like a progressive dinner, but for audio. Its an idea some of the SA crew have chatted about but never tried to get off the ground. l think its great myself and are surprised too at the lack of interest.

I also don't have anything on your list, but I am hoping to have the econowaves built by then.

That's it Mondie! When I was a kid we used to have progressive dinners and I used to love it. I thought "what about an audio progressive dinner." I often think about audio in terms of food. Classical music = Caesar salad, rock = a big greasy burger, pop = Maccas, pop rock = KFC, jazz = prawn cocktails ...

People don't have to have the list, those are just examples keep in mind. It's more of a suggestion that the hosts have some kind of "flavour." I have a bit of an agenda too - I'd like to hear some more big horns, ESLs and FR driver systems. Sure, you can walk into a hifi store but I don't like to take up their time knowing I'm not going to buy. I also think the best way to experience something is to hear a set up that the owner has carefully put together as a labour of love. Making it a social event - even better!

Hi Craig, good question! A GTG at Jasper's gave me an idea. He had quite a crowd but there was only one listening chair. People just took turns in the chair, a few others stood behind for a listen, everyone else chatted. It worked just fine. When I've had GTGs I've always tried to seat everyone in the listening room all at the same time. Doesn't have to be that way.

I suppose 10 could be a good number, give or take. If there is a bit of "musical chairs" and people bring stand up finger food then I figure it shouldn't be too difficult for people to host.

How does that sound? If more than that want to come and the hosts don't mind, we could stretch it.

I like the idea Paul. Couple of comments though:
Six different systems in one day makes it a bloody long day and possibly not enough time to have a decent listen to any system properly.

Also, I assume the hosts would want to listen to the other systems as well, so that potentially adds another six or so people to the convoy. You'd need to be careful that it doesn't get too big.

regards, Trevor

Your system is just the kind I had in mind, because of the speakers especially. Many haven't heard speakers like these, and that's what this event is all about. If your system isn't exotic enough, then the bar is set too high and we end up with no event!

Would be happy to host as a full active system if i can get the new room up to standards before this goes forward.
I have a hell of allot of work to do though, so no promises

I think we are lacking in both. I'm also not sure the level of enthusiasm is there, I thought people would jump on it and we'd quickly get a guest list and have to limit numbers. As it is, it seems to have fizzed out!

Paul, you mentioned 3 systems, I see three systems offered, and around half a dozen people have expressed interest. sounds like it just needs some organizing. I think around 6 -10 participants is ample.

most GTG's these days seem to be organised in private between friends.
Th days of advertising them here seem to be gone apart from the odd one now and again

Ok, let's make it happen!

I'll suggest Nov 19th (Sat) or 20th (Sun).

So at this point we have Craig's system with some nice DIY Jazzman speakers. Whatmore with his Zingalis. Yamaha with some Wilsons? Ok we're getting a theme here with the names!

We have a couple of tentatives as well, but first I'll check if those who are ready to host are available on either of those 2 dates.

Let's get together a bit of a guest list as well.

Hi Paul, if you need additional host please put me in as tentative.

I'm only like 5 mins. from Craig's place. I can show & tell the econowaves, dipoles, and omni.

As you know, my place is small but I now have the (unfinished) audio room, hence able to split. How many people are we talking about?
My equipments have dissapeared....
