Hi,

I have pulled my old 'table out of storage and need it serviced as well as needing to have a few KAB mods installed. Does anyone know of a good tech that could do the work?

Many Thanks :)

Hi nkoulban,
I am regarded as something of a knowledeable person (on other Audio forums), on all matters concerning the SL1200s, as I have designed a number of Precision Bearing and Platter upgrades for the SL1200. Also External Power supplies however I do not produce these.
I have both the Timestep and KAB external power supplies on my own SL1200s and have done work with Paul Haynes on his top-of-the-range units.
I would be happy to assist you in upgrading your SL1200 either by doing the work or assisting you with advice. I live in Sydney

Hi nkoulban, send Duc [lovetube here on SNA] a PM, I'm sure he will be able to service your deck and do the mods. This is his website and he's in Melbourne.:)
Cheers,

Guys, thanks so much for your advice on servicing my Technics. If anyone has any questions on a Technics and setting it up I have a bit of experience which I would gladly share with anyone here. :)

I have a SL1210M5G set up as follows:
KAB Fluid Damper
Super thick KAB rubber mat
Michell record clamp
Zupreme Headshell
AT OC9/II MC Cart (Aligned using the Technics MINT protractor)
Bobs Devices Cinemag SUT
Project SE Phono Pre
KAB EVI record cleaner and Disc Doctor cleaning system
Milty Zerostat gun
Carbon fibre brush

I am going to install the KAB strobe disabler and PSU to get a bit more focus and blacker backgrounds. Overall, very happy with the sound I'm getting from this TT with the Audio Technica MC cart. The stock tonearm is very decent especially with the fluid damper... a pleasent surprise here as I was not expecting much in the tonearm department.

I recently tried a DL103R and hated it, too warm and fuzzy sounding with more surface noise. For me, the darkish kind of closed in sound of the Technics is not a good match for a warm sounding cart, whereas the brighter AT cart is the prefect andedote. Even though the AT results in a resonant frequency at the lower end of what is acceptable it manages to work well in this setup.

I'll report back on the improvements I get with this.

Keep poster No*2 in reserve too nkoulban , if my suspicions are correct , he may just be able to assist with some further upgrades re: high precision bearing

I am inclined to agree about the DL103R, in that I think it is a bit fuzzy. The surface noise, I think, is not a necessary quality, and suggests something is not quite right.

As for the strobe disabler, I would love to know the theory behind any improvement that would make, though I would also be prepared to listen with an open mind.

A separate power supply may make a difference.

One I get the mods done I'll see if the TT sounds better... fair chance it will sound the same of course. As for the surface noise with the DL103R I'm scratching my head over that one too. I have aligned the cart using a MINT protrcator made for the Technics, VTF is 2.5g... and have run a test record so I know this cart is spot on. When I use my AT OC9/II aligned in the same way virtually no surface noise. I'm going to stick to the Audio Technicas and sell off my barely used DL103R to help fund a PTG33/II.

Thanks for your post NIMBUS! The bearing and platter upgrades look interesting... are you able to provide any details on these? Also, do you have an opinion on the KAB vs the Timestep PSU upgrades?
