Was going to post this in the 'Any Leica Users Thread' but thought it warranted a new thread.

Same guts as the regular M9. You get a sapphire crystal LCD cover, a different paint finish, no red dot or script on the front and the old style "Leica" on the top plate oh and a bigger price tag. The black paint finish looks good but will never look as cool as a black paint MP.

Victor,

According to this reviewer, Matthew Lentini, Lumix Lens Maker Leica Releases Smallest Full-Frame Digicam.

There are just too many so called "reviewers" on the net nowadays!

Good to see that Leica has copied the design of the X100 :-)

Interesting 'review' Jack. Clearly not a Leica owner.
The big question is do you ditch your M9 in favour of the M9-P?
I do like the old style 'Leica' script on the top though...

Victor,

Some nice added features to the M9-P but I am not too sure if they help to take better photos. But if someone is buying my M9, I might think about it ...

Jack,

Good luck to Leica when they use their snob value to make money from all these Hermes handbag special editions but personally they leave me cold.

Dave,

I think those Special Hermes M's paid for a lot of research and development and that is how Leica manages to stay in black.

It is a free world, supply and demand will govern the price and how companies package and promote their products. Time will tell if it is successful or not.

It is hard to say if it is a bling, an art or instrument, it is up to the owners how he/she intends to use it.

How about the M9 Hammertone for Japanese market?

I still prefer the Black Paint version...

I'm seriously considering a chrome mp-9 and chrome f1.4 50mm lux!

I haven't seen the black mp-9 or chrome in the flesh. Any opinions?

Should get the m9-p within a few weeks. Haven't ordered a chrome lux but anticipate anywhere between 6-12 months wait. Was thinking maybe a zeiss sonnar 50mm 1.5 to tide me over whilst I wait. Might need to offload some stuff and free up cash first.

I don't know the Zeiss that well.

Have you considered older Leica glass?

My other 50 is a 45 year old collapsable. I love it (almost as much as the summilux).

I keep my eye on ebay, but haven't seen anything I want yet!

Not opposed to old leica glass. Ultimately that is the real investment as the body will be obsolete in a few years no doubt!

Well I jumped in the deep end. Got my new m9-p (chrome) today and through a stroke of luck also got a summilux 50mm asph f1.4 (also in chrome). Now to learn (1) a rangefinder and (2) full manual operation.

A deadly combo. You have jumped in at the deep end. Very lucky to get that lens.

Getting the hang of all manual operation is all part of the fun. It is also much more satisfying when you nail a shot.

I'd love to see a photo of your new baby and the results of course.

Are you using LR3?

Hi Dave

I downloaded lightroom 3 last night. I'll need to work out how to use that too! My wife gave me a few simple pointers last night.

Nailing focus at f1.4 is going to take some practice. I didn't have much natural light when I got home last night and only managed to take a few shots of the bub before her bedtime and a few practice shots to work on that manual focusing.

I am hoping to get more of an opportunity to play this weekend (although time is limited).

Initial thoughts are that it is a very simple camera to opperate. Without needing to refer to the instructions, everything seems pretty intuitive. Full manual operation is not difficult, but I find I am too slow to focus at the moment (admittedly I haven't left f1.4 so I don't have a lot of margin for error). With practice I think this will become second nature (like changing gears on a manual car).

My wife (who loves her canon 7d) had a play and whilst saying that lack of auto focus is a pain and it's hard to focus using the rangefinder focus overlay etc etc I think she might also grow to love the M9 and rangefinder experience (loves the 'leica look').

Scott Kelby's LR3 book is a pretty good way to get to learn the software. Some of the online tutorials are also handy.

I can see trouble ahead when you both want the M9-P and the Canon is sulking on the shelf.

And when I said I wanted a photo of your baby, I was thinking of the camera :-)

I don't think you can ever get enough photo's of them at this age - they change right before your eyes and you struggle to remember how they were a month ago.

The problem is you get so caught up in the day to day stuff that you forget to make the time to capture that very same day to day stuff and then you can't remember it properly when you try.

I think that's the beauty of photography, being able to capture a moment or a memory. I like and admire all styles of photography, but I love street/candid portraiture for that capturing of a moment.
