Hi Guys,

After playing around with digital audio de-embedding/capturing for sacd playback & backups, (click), I've come to the conclusion that this method is subject to the quality of the DSD2PCM conversion step in the players used for the process - and that in the 3 players I've tried, the converter chips were a compromise.

I'm now focussing my energy on extracting DFF files off the SACD discs. This will give me a straight file copy of the music files. I can then do what I like with them. Convert them to PCM using software then playback using my current solutions.

The biggest benefit is having backups of the music/discs, many of which are long OOP.

There is a solution under development to do this extraction, it's called sacd-ripper. Information can be found here.... click; sacd-ripper

To this point sacd-ripper has been a Linux app, which needed a Linux O/S installed onto a suitable PS3. But the project is now developing a native PS3 app, that will execute from within the GameOS PS3 operating system (as long as it has the LV1 patch).

This thread will document the process of achieving backups of my sacd's, by using sacd-ripper (native ps3 app version).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Update @ 18-June: Sacd ripping using a PS3 is now working, using a pre-release version of sacd-ripper (taking iso images of the sacd layer is stable). The details on what is required are;

1) Obtain a sacd capable PS3. For the suitable PS3 model numbers click here- PS3 compatibility list
2) Make sure the PS3 is at firmware version 3.55 or less (versions >=3.56 cant be rolled back, and cant be used for sacd-ripper)
3) Apply the OtherOS custom firmware update, required for sacd-ripper. OtherOS is available from here- http://gitbrew.org/otheros/
- Notes; there have been some reports of OtherOS bricking some players, use at your own risk.
,,,instructions for applying OtherOS is documented here- Click
,,,note, the downloaded OtherOS firmware image will need to be renamed to PS3UPDAT.PUP in between steps 4/5 in the documented process above.
4) Obtain the PS3 sacd keys and load them into the root of a USB stick/drive, available here- PS3 keys
5) Obtain the latest SACD-RIPPER package and load it into the root of a USB stick/drive. Not currently available in pre-compiled form, information can be found here- http://code.google.com/p/sacd-ripper/
6) Make sure you have a USB stick/drive that has enough capacity to store the rips (4gb minimum), needs to be formatted as FAT32.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
sacd-ripper download link:

Update @ 11-July: compiled sacd-ripper r252 pkg (stable beta release) can be downloaded here; Click-post #266
---------------------------------------------------------------------
scarletbook download link:

Update @ 9-July, compiled scarletbook release r252 available here; Click-post #245

Info: scarletbook.exe is a Windows application that can be used to extract individual tracks out of an ISO image that was taken by sacd-ripper. This utility is useful, if you want to minimise processing time on your PS3. The older PS3's are known to have overheating issues leading to the dreaded YLOD failure. In my case, I intend to minimise the usage of my PS3 by restricting it to taking ISO images only, and then using scarletbook on my pc to extract the tracks and convert them to PCM(wav) files.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
SACD ISO Decoding in Foobar:

Update @ 17-July, SACD ISO images created by sacd-ripper can now be played back in Foobar natively, with no file extractions or conversions required using a plugin called "Super Audio CD Decoder".

The first step on this journey to rip SACD's, is to find a suitable PS3.

I've been loaned a PS3 with firmware 3.56 by a fellow forum member, and have been granted the license to try and rollback the firmware to an earlier version. No mean feat. There are plenty of instructions on the internet, some are bogus.

Has anyone got any experience rolling back their PS3 firmware?

The author of OtherOS has produced a youtube clip, which guides the user through loading the OtherOS custom firmware, and subsequently Linux (which his firmware is usually used for). This clip seems to suggest that formatting the PS3 harddrive will let the user then load their firmware of choice. But it's not that clear. I'm not sure if it's just wiping and starting again with the same firmware level (#), or whether it will let me roll back to an earlier version. Here's the clip....

Upu6X3m8rV0

Has anyone on SNA done this? Can you offer any advise?

Edit: I've since learned that the method in this clip cannot be used to rollback the firmware from 3.56 to an earlier version.

Hi oz, downgrade the firmware to 3.55 is currently not possible.
My son accidentally upgraded my PS3 to 3.60 last month so I'm waiting for the release of a new OtherOS version.

Hi oz, downgrade the firmware to 3.55 is currently not possible.

I've heard that is the case if the player has been upgraded to 3.60, as they locked it down further. But I'm holding out hope that I can still rollback from 3.56.

My son accidentally upgraded my PS3 to 3.60 last month so I'm waiting for the release of a new OtherOS version.

It's more complicated than that, unfortunately. The 3.60 version of OtherOS is 1 thing. The other problem, is that Sony changed the sacd keys on the PS3 for firmware 3.60.

sacd-ripper only works with the older PS3 keys, available here; click

The keys for 3.60 are not available at this point, as I understand.

Thanks for the info!
I don't think downgrade from 3.56 to 3.55 is currently possible.

Yes it will, as I understand, sacd-ripper will let you take an iso image of the sacd layer, or extract the individual DFF files. I believe it will have menu options to choose. Quoted from the author......

The user interface is simple but it will allow you to dump DSDIFF, DSF, ISO in both multi and stereo channels and it also creates the necessary ID3 tags so your track/disc information is not lost.

I will confirm this once I get it working.

Need to roll back the firmware first, if I can?

Thanks Millsy. I was just curious if my SACD player would be capable of playing an SACD iso burnt to recordable DVD.

Yeah.......they cracked ordinary CD's in a flash because they were so popular.
If DSD was as popular, we would have had it six months after release!

You make a fair point. But CD never had any kind of security applied to it, like SACD's have had - it's got 2 layers of copy protection, hardware where only properly licensed drives can read the discs, and software where the data is encrypted.

But yeah, I tend to agree, that if sacd's were more prevalent, then it wouldve been cracked long ago.

The work being done, is to try and get any regular pc dvd player to be able to read sacd's, and then extract/copy etc. I'm not holding my breath, but remain hopeful.

Until then, I'm pursuing this PS3 method.

"cracked ordinary CD's" ? ...

anyway, epic fail - installed 3.55 firmware, sacd-ripper package, launched ok, but every disc I inserted came back with "sacd not recognised" - or something along those lines... ran the ps3 model detection pkg and "sacd not supported" on the drive..

I completely forgot my original 60gb PS3 was replaced with a 80gb model when our place was robbed a couple of years back..

oh well, time to find a 60gb model

Primary driver is to have backups of my OOP sacd's that are really difficult to replace.

Once I have the data backed up and extracted, I can do other things with it. Like convert it, and play it back on other (better sounding) non-sacd based hardware.

With me, it's more about playing the songs I want, in the order I want (or randomly even) without having to change discs, etc.

Progress. Baby steps.

I've bought a second hand PS3 that has 3.55 firmware. It arrived today. It powers up, plays back sacd's (it's a CECHC02 model), and reports 3.55 firmware.

Now to load the custom (OtherOS) firmware......

Well done oz! How long would it take to rip a SACD?

It's taking awhile, it's fairly slow, I'm only getting about 0.4M per second. The readme file for sacd-ripper says it should be about 0.9M per second, maybe there are some scratches on this first sacd?? This is a pre-release version, so,,, who knows. I'm writing to the usb stick, that might have something to do with the speed??

From the readme.....

There seems to be an SACD BluRay read speed limit that sets the maximum read speed to 2.6MB/sec,
yes I agree, this is slow! But DST decoding is even slower.. The PS3 GameOS has 6 SPUs available
for user operations. SACD-Ripper uses 1 SPU for decryption and the other 5!! for DST decoding.
Although this process is quite optimal the current decoding speed has been measured to be 0.9MB/sec
for a 2 channel rip. So for 2ch DST tracks the write speed to disc will be around 2.3MB/sec, for a
multi-channel the write speed is a bit higher (2.4MB.sec) but decoding is even slower at 0.6MB/sec.
