Some time during the next month I plan to upgrade my Lightroom from Version 2.6 to the latest 3 version. I have found 2.6 adequate up to date, with occasional excursions to Photoshop for those especial pics.

Any comments on how often people using L3 find they still go to Photoshop for special layer work? My expectation from reading comments on Luminous Landscape is that this will become pretty much unnecessary, and am interested what people here might have experienced.

Ask me in a week or two. We just upgraded computer and I have ordered the Adobe design suite and Lightroom (should have arrived by now, but not yet). However, I'll probably end up using Photoshop for a lot of things as I am very familiar with it.

Don't know if I should be sharing information with you without a consultancy fee though :party Maybe you could pay me in Lattes (but not ones made from a pod).

I have LR3 having previously used Aperture2. The reason for the move was that A2 can not open RAW files from my camera. The camera shipped with a copy of LR3.

I have never felt the need for PS for my PP. LR3 gives plenty of control over your photos and with plugins such as those from Niksoft available should I need it, I'm not sure what extra PS could do for me.

The online tutorials were good to get me started. I've also bought Skott Kelby's LR3 book. Once you get past his lame jokes there is a lot of useful information.

LR3 does not do layers but certainly does more than LR2 did, a worthwhile upgrade, in fact they are up to 3.4 now. It really depends on what you want to do. A lot of plug-ins only work with PS so if you use plugins, either find LR compatible ones or use PS. OnOne Software has just released a new layers module for LR but I haven't tried it yet. Personally I do 95% of work in LR after RAW conversion but still go to PS for some things but would do more if I had more time! It really comes down to what you are trying or want to do in particular!

Why don't you develop most of your photos in LR? I have spoken to a couple of professional photographers over the last few years and they tell me that they need to revert to Photoshop for only a small percentage of their work. That was for LR2.6, and LR3 is even better for RAW.

Is it familiarity with Photoshop that has you sticking with it or is there something else you have found? I have found that my workflow is much better in LR and that I have enjoyed my photography more because of it.

The only time I go to Photoshop now is when I feel like spending an hour or more on a photo - and I do that less and less as I find the outcome just looks too digital, unnaturally sharp and comic like. I find that once I finish with them they initially look quite arresting but tend to jar after a while. Most probably just my own assessment, as I find that others still like them, but I get less and less satisfaction out of that now.

Well it arrived at work today so I'll find out what Lightroom can do when I get a chance. Only briefly used LR2 so it will be new to me. Only had a digital camera since December anyway.

Pretty much.......I'm more into music editing so photos are only a side thing for me.
Been using PS since about a year after it came out and still only use about 10% of its capabilities.
Can you do just basic tweaking and resizing in LR?

Hi guys,

I upgraded on line with Adobe.

Mustud, I feel the upgrade was worth it for my style of photography, it will also do lens and body corrections if you wish.

It's basically all I use these days, although I should learn to use Photoshop and layers as some of my images could do with some tweaking. I've been advised to buy Elements 9 as opposed to PS, as apparently its way cheaper and does layers etc that one uses in PS. Still need to investigate.

I only find layers useful for doing layouts for pamphlets and web pages etc.
(mind you, I'm all self taught and pro users run rings around me speed wise..........and they may do things differently too)

I have Elements 9. A lovely programme, however I only use it when I have to. I think I will use it less when I upgrade to LR3.

I am so over Photoshop. More time thinking about composition and walking around with the camera suits me.

You've got some great locations around your area, so no excuses :thumb:

I was up in the Sherbrooke forest last weekend, some magnificent places in there. I'm thinking of going back in a couple of weeks to try and photograph some of the fungi.

Hi Spearmint,

Thanks for the reply.

I tried that but somehow I got directed to a website that is outside Australia, so I am not sure if I am getting the right product and support.

Try to support the local dealers whenever possible.

You're welcome

Yes I think my copy came from Singapore or somewhere over that way.

I guess it's a catch22 situation as the program itself is not Australian, and being an upgrade I'm not sure if many shops would stock it, unlike Microsoft products.

Have you tried CitySoftware?

Hi Minty,

I have not tried any yet. LR2 is good and easy to use but I still find iPhoto quick to load and store.

Will try Leon's link or wait for LR4 to come... :thumb:

I guess it comes down to the user. I actually use either Canon's DPP or or Capture One Pro v5 (can't justify upgrading to v6). Like LP, If I had LR I'd probaby using it for organising too...

Have bought a 70-200mm F2.8L and a 7D to put it on since I last spoke to you... What about yourself? Don't Leica give you a free upgrade to LR? Maybe if you buy another M9 they will, then you can lend it to me! Seen the Fuji X100?

I don't think Leica gives free upgrade. They just managed get its account back on black, not much margin to give free upgrades... :)

Yes, a lot of publicity about the X100, very interesting concept and great look. Many compare it to the Leica X1 and is gaining some strong followers.

Are you interested?

Should get together soon!

mustud52, I note that rumours of LR4 are being to surface based on the fact that LR3 is being offer cheap in the USA... No more idea than that. Adobe usually offer a free upgrade for a period of time when a new version is released and you have just bought the previous one.

Jack, yes we should catch up, I have a lot of green tea...!

I've read that also. Typical, I've not long made the upgrade to LR3 just prior to our recent trip to the US :) I bet I'll just be outside the free upgrade period if it eventuates.

Yes, I also have seen predicuions on when LR4 will come out. Based on previous release history, I understand the punting is for the fourth quarter this year.

I have not yet upgraded to LR4 as I am happy to keep using LR2.6 for another month or so - fits in with my time schedule better then. I will need to get Michael Reichman's video tutes when I upgrade (I purchased his LR1 and LR2 guides when they came out) and need the time to get benefit of the upgrade.

I guess that means I can see if there are any further rumours on LR4 release at that time. I am interested in the softproofing that is rumoured to be included in the upgrade.

Yes, there are some great deals at present, particularly in the U.S. if you can take advantage of that market.
