Um.... a new 'threat' about what I'm watching?

As in, if you don't like it you'll come round my house and give me a severe talking to!!! :D

Just kidding.... just finished Generation Kill - from the Wire guys.... I think it's playing over here on ABC 2 at the moment too. But I gorged all 7 eps over 2 days on DVD. It's amazing - gritty, raw and does that thing that all great TV or film does, takes you into a world you don't know. And that's no mean feat considering how many war films we've all seen.

Same witty, dense, nuanced dialogue as you got in the Wire and the same attention to detail. The world created (a vision of hell in some parts...) feels utterly real.

The authenticity these guys (David Simon et al) achieve seems to come from a journo's commitment to research - and in this case, apparently the whole story was based on the articles of a guy embedded with the 1st recon marines. However, and I'm gunna tread warily here because I don't want to spoil anyone's enjoyment.... it felt to me that it was a little too faithful to the source material. Either that or it was trying to make a particular statement about that conflict in it's dramatic approach. Anyone who's seen it may be able to identify with what I'm saying (or disagree completely!).

But that said, it's still a cracking watch. Some of the best moments are the pop culture references that come thick and fast among the dialogue of the young marines. And the spectacle of four blokes rolling across the Iraqi desert in an armour plated humvee singing 'Loving you' in harmonised (badly) falsetto is pure GOLD!

Four stars from me. Margret?

GOing TV Series mad of late - The Wire, Dexter, Shameless, Oz - must track down Generation Kill. Caught 5 mins of it the other day on ABC and it did look very good (didn't realise it was from 'The Wire' guy - he is doing another series 'Treme' about the aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans which is apparently up there with the best too - one to look out for).

Ive been watching Star Trek Enterprise, from the beginning. Almost finished the 2nd season, watching 1 episode a night. I'm not sure why but I am drawn to it.

Is a bit like the old joke:

Q: What's the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek?

A: The hot chicks in Star Trek

Coast on SBS

Oz and James Drink to Britain (brilliant!)

Top Gear

Men behaving badly (seems to have been pulled sadly)

Grand Designs

Cycling Central

A move to the country

On DVD we have been working through a great British medical drama made 2004/05 called Bodies. So realistic l have to look away at times. Occasionally we watch an episode of the Prisoner on Blu-ray, the picture on this set is exceptional even if some of the lots are no easier to decipher

Cheers,

mondie

the best show on TV at the moment IMO is " the Inbetweeners " Thursdays 9pm on GO. It's the 2nd series I have watched, but I think it is the 3rd and last series showing?.

" The Inbetweeners is about four teenagers growing up in middle-class British suburbia. It’s a world of futile crushes, getting drunk, fancying the girl next door, casting aspersions on your friend’s sexuality, and perving at your mate’s mum. "

Bloody hilarious - but it has lots of swearing, wanking, porn and all other such things 17-19 year old males try to get up to - so definately not for the children. US tv could never do this, bravo UK.

I'm with you, Danter. I haven;t yet caught up with Dexter, but the others are mostly great. As for the Wire guys, IMO The Wire itself is way better than Generation Kill, although I also liked that very much, and I have only watched the first episode of Treme... it didn't do it for me, but I should probably watch another episode or two before coming to a conclusion...

Our most recent addiction is In Treatment... we did a serial rental of Series 1 and 2 from our local video library.... can't wait for series 3! Highly recommended... but nothing can touch The Wire, IMO.
