Recently, somebody drew my attention to this post in this thread:

Hi my friend
I am a humble music listner and looking at your system I don't think that I could ever be able to afford that.Congratulation, you have done really well. But now the question is how the esoteric system sounds??I have seen and heard lots of very fancy equipment with very ordinary sound costing a fortune.Martin Logans electrostatics,Burmester amps, have seen it all.Price tag..20.000-30.000 ,even more.Sound...well,that's another story. To me,nothing special, waste of money.
I am using a fullrange Coral beta 10 inch speakers in original cabinets and an Audio Note 300B kit,Audio Research(from the 80s)SP-8 and D-70 combo. All I can tell you,the sound is amazing and the price tag is 3000-5000$.I would love to listen to your system, the look it's not important to me...nor the price tag. Till than it's another expensive "combo" which doesn't impress me at all.I wonder what sensitivity would have the speakers with so many drivers involved. The cones of the woofers are made of a heavy mesh ,I don't think they would be to sensitive.I looked already and it's what I expected:
Impedance loading:
6 Ohms nominal, 4 Ohm minimum 20 Hz to 20 kHz
Sensitivity:
87 dB @1m, 2.83V input
To me looks prety bad. What's going to happen with the exposure to dust of the woofers??how are going to clean them???there is no "back" covering the drivers.
You can't use realy the speakers with tubes amps, they are not sensitive for a nice 300B single ended amp or similar.See,to me it's not something I would buy.The speakers won't have much bass, for sure because they are almost open bafle.Anyway,I don't want to upset you with my comments.Good luck and I hope the time will never come when you go to another friend of yours who dosn't have much money and plays something simple which would sound better than your expensive gear,it happens a lot of time.Just an fullrange single driver stuck in an pair of cabinets bought for 20$ from the Op Shop arround the corner and an old Leak Stereo 20 or an Audio Note kit 300B single ended amp(probably only 8W per channel) running a home built passive preamp,etc,etc...and the gear PLAYS MUSIC...it's not made to impress with the look. Take care D.

To put things in context:

1. New member joins SNA (join date: Jan 2011)
2. Said new member proudly shows off his system in The Showcase
3. He receives above post in response (in effect - "I have never heard your system, you are a fool to have spent so much money, my cheaper system will outperform yours").

Now, those who know me know that I have gone to bat for new members many times in the past. Even if a new member says something really really stupid (and I am not implying for a moment that the OP of that thread is guilty of that), it is our duty as older members to gently point them in the right direction and not do anything to put them off.

As some of you might remember from the Adelaide Speakers thread, I am willing to fight for people who have post counts less than 10, and in the process, hand out bans and risk losing sponsors in the process. Make no mistake - this is something we feel strongly about.

To continue - posting a system in the Showcase is an act of trust and of sharing. Yes, you get to see all that great gear but you can also see how other people live. They are showing pictures of their own home, after all.

I personally get a lot of enjoyment out of looking at systems on the Showcase and I am sure many of you do, too. However, I do not expect everyone to agree with the way other systems have been assembled. I certainly do ask myself "WTF were they thinking??" from time to time but I either keep my thoughts to myself or try to post something constructive.

I think posts like the above are unforgiveable. They show extremely bad manners and very poor taste. I was gratified to learn from the OP that he has received multiple PM's of support. It shows there are decent folk on SNA after all.

Can't believe some of the crap that has sneaked into SNA in the last 12 months. How rude to rubbish someones system as a first up post or anytime.
It's all very disapionting and 'one' of the reasons I don't post as much any more.

I love reading posts written by supposed authorities. Especially when they are chock full of spelling and grammatical errors, they really add to the gravitas of the author.

KM's reply was given with great dignity and he should be congratulated for shutting down an ill informed and opinionated individual.

How can you protect SNA from someone's first post . You can't. However in this case it seems there is only one thing to do:

The eletric chair or
maybe lethal injection.
Hanging has been deemed too cruel.
Oh heck, why not not just delete his rubbish and ban him.
It might not be justice, but it would be for the greater good for SNA.

:P
Edit:

Sorry, I misread Kieth's post. This was not "that" someone's first post at all. However, my view still stands. No leniency.

Few points for balance:

1. Bad grammar means only that, bad grammar. Speak in my language and we will see who will laugh. I give you 20+ years to learn, good luck :P

2. Point made, in bad way and not in a right place, I must admit, is that some very expensice audio components are very average on sound. No suprise, consumerism is very common these days.

3. What Anglo Saxons might consider as unpolite in other cultures might be called honesty/directness ect. We live in a global village now, including this forum. Its not an isolated island. So dont be suprise somebody does not fit into your menatlity.

Something to think about before commiting a public lynch.

Maybe devise a simple test on hi-fi basics for anybody contemplating signing on ?

I've noticed some real strange newbies of late.

They seem to sign up, post FS ads, don't add any value to SNA and then they're gone just as quickly as they appear.

the post by km was of a very good system put up for those of us on here that appreciate it to see his great system, but instead of a " great system mate well done " this guy took a cheap shot and rubbished it without knowing anything about it or even listening to it? sorry but from my point of view it was rude and unwarranted. even if he totally believes what he said, if he speaks like this in everyday life is he not going to get smacked in the head by someone who takes offense to his total honesty and directiveness, and does not have the manners that km showed by his polite answer?

I remembered seing this post on the start of a thread not so long ago:

"Hi guys
I don't understand why on earth you would want to build a Hi-Fi system to use with your Computer,Ipod,USB devices, etc, etc???
A Hi-Fi system to me is much more than an average, crap MP3 player.
A digital signal from a cheap, nasty Ipod will never sound really good on any Hi-Fi systems, cheap or expensive.
You need very good quality components,a good CD player, amplifier, speakers.
You can build something to play your crap MP3s ..but for GOOD SAKE,don't called it Hi-Fi.

And then, a lot of people congratulated him on an opinionated post. So is he allowed to or isn't he?

Wether a persons post is valid or not for what ever reason, as I see it, is not at difference here.

After some merriment and frivolity, I have come to understand the purpose of K-W making the thread. (and to the newcomers, be advised that K-W and I have locked horns more times that I care to remember in the past).

But you see I do agree!

Why would any one want to squeeze and push and bastardise music into Mp3 and then expect to enjoy the payback??

It does make less than any sense to me!

No one is forcing you to participate in this thread Tricka. If you don't think it matters, perhaps it's better to keep that to yourself. At times you post in a very blunt and abrasive way. So who cares? Those on the receiving end care. And also those like myself who want to see the forum remain an enjoyable place to talk about a favourite hobby. Clearly you don't care. It would be a problem if Keith felt the same way and if everyone didn't care the place would likely go up in flames. The simple truth is that a community such as this can't afford the luxury of allowing everyone to post in a rude and offensive manner. Basic courtesy does matter.

Keith,

I for one appreciate the effort that you put in to keep things on track.

Thanks V.

I can be 'single-minded/ended' if it calls for it.

Even been called 'obtuse' by some well-meaning colleagues.............

I have never seen any result of that Cables. But by "balanced" I was not being very kind, my apologies.

Classic ignorance to criticise a system that has not been heard, but perhaps...the critic's english is so bad that what he meant to say is not what he wrote ??? Alternatively maybe it is a disgruntled ex-member trying to stir up the mods ??
If the US govt can force Coca Cola off the market until they removed cocaine from their product,
then govts can do the same to cigarette companies who add nicotine to their product.
Raising revenue is not an excuse for allowing manufacturers to use addiction to sell product.
Imagine the public outrage if supermarkets put addictive chemicals in meat or vegetables.

Many of you (and this is a generalisation, fingers are not pointed anywhere in particular) sound like a bunch of old women with nothing better to do than whinge and moan. My opinion doesn't carry much weight around here I know as a newbie, however as another human being my feeling so far is that there is a real elitist vibe from a good portion of the community.

I love the technical knowledge, the sharing of this, and the jokey banter, and the get togethers sound like a bit of fun, but I think far to much time is wasted on this sort of crap, King Marty is a big boy and he dealt with the comments, if they didn't violate forum policy why start a thread other than to inflame an otherwise benign situation?

Ps. I use my computer to listen to music, and love it. Not everyone here is the same, thats what 'should' make this place a bit of fun.

sorry about this but had to be done, I have been reading far to many angsty posts, people need to start popping some chill pills around here.

Thank you, Paul. Reason for this thread isn't so much for the public lynching - it is to remind everyone that we are in this together. The mods can not make SNA a happy place. Everybody has to have a part in it. And we should start by being more welcoming towards our new members.

Ha, ha.........I think you find an 'elitist' group on every forum, although, audio is probably the worst.
It's a personal thing and everybody hears differently so there will never be consensus.
Once you accept this, it's water off a duck's back.

I prefer a lively discussion to a sedate one anyway.

I agree with you Paul and also the fact that Keith highlighted the subject post. In the scheme of things it isn't that big a deal and I hope KM simply ignores it, as he should. Of more concern to me is the thought, that what a cow of a place this would be if even just a few more had an attitude like tricka's toward this forum. Thankfully, that is not the case.

Cheers,

Keith

It is my Probe'logic friend, but I did at first misunderstand K-w's post, and yes I was un-abating, to which I have apologised.

I have also invited the original poster who may share a piece or two of equipment to a GTG.

But you see I do agree!

Why would any one want to squeeze and push and bastardise music into Mp3 and then expect to enjoy the payback??

It does make less than any sense to me!

Can't believe some of the crap that has sneaked into SNA in the last 12 months. How rude to rubbish someones system as a first up post or anytime.
It's all very disapionting and 'one' of the reasons I don't post as much any more.

Is that why I have been missing your banter Grumps?

I am only relatively new to this site but do enjoy it immensely and think that the more rude and negative posts that are entered on this site it will go down hill very quickly and diminish every ones enjoyment from SNA.

To rubbish someones system whether it is expensive or less so (mine), is poor form. We get enjoyment from our music and that should be a major benefit from this Forum, as well as continuously expanding our knowledge.

The most enjoyment I get is from the clever light hearted banter from members such as LogicprObe, Voltaire & Nude (RIP). If that were to fade away so would I.
