Anyone know of a good universal remote purely for audio gear? E.g. NAD amp, couple of CD players? I don't really need TV controls and all the other stuff that most have.

Dion,

Have a look at the basic logitec remotes. You need to use the internet to set them up initially, but once done, will never need your original remotes. If the logitech database does not have the codes for your gear, you can use your existing remotes to teach the logitech.

To me, the great thing about the harmonies, is how you set up activities. This means you do not have to press buttons to switch from say amp control to CDP control. Instead when you set up the activiity you tell it what bits of gear you want to control and what buttons control what.

I use a harmony 525 to control my system and the volume/mute buttons control the amp, whereas play etc control the transport.

EVen better, I would love a remote that can defy the laws of physics, and operate through solid objects.

Easily solved, Cameron.

Get an RF remote, they work through walls, solid or otherwise.

Most garage remotes fall into this category.

+ 1 for Logitech harmony. Grabbed the base model for less than 30 smackers at Orifice Works just after xmas and it's been a delight.

And now, thanks mcb's post, I'm no longer switching between devices whenever I want to adjust the volume on the amp while watching TV:) - was the only thing that was annoying me! Cheers!

Just to reiterate, for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread, the activities is the key to getting the most out of a Harmony.

We have three in this house and would not be without them. They really come to the for with AV systems. Having 5 remotes for one AV system is way too painful.

i bought a harmony one a couple of weeks ago. main reason so my wife could just press "watch dvd" and everything would switch and an she only has to control volume. i was quite amazed how easy it was to set everything up and it was even easy to program my citypulse dac into it. the computer application for setting up activities is great and really easy to use.

Thanks all. I had looked at the Logitechs but wondered if there was anything more just for audio, doesn't seem like it. I'll go down that path. It's also needed because my NAD amps remote has died.
